I've found that even people who don't think much of him tend to regard him as really talented - I usually hear "he's kind of a freakshow, but he's such an amazing musician." Ain't nothing embarrassing about that...and anyway, when people goof on Prince's crazy ass, I'm usually goofin' right along with em.

He's never made it easy to tell people you like him. There have always been embarrassing, self-indulgent episodes. For me, the more important thing is that his music stopped being so consistently interesting after Sign and Lovesexy. Not sure what he was thinking, but he seemed stung by the charges that he'd forsaken his black audience and his music became more trend-oriented and less daring. This is not to say that there aren't gems here and there (Electric Chair, Joy in Repetition, Live For Love, God Created Woman, Question of U, Love to the 9s come to mind), but I haven't been able to listen to an album all the way through (or even more than a couple of times before shelving it) for a while. Somebody burned NEWS for me and I couldn't get through it and haven't been interested enough to even try again.
The sad thing is that there hasn't been anybody since the advent of Prince to interest me as much. I thought TTD was the heir apparent, but he kinda disappeared after some too-easily dispensed with albums.
I resigned myself to accepting that he would just evolve into a great live performer, period (the best I've seen). However, One Night Alone was REALLY ordinary and sub-par stuff. Of course, an artist with no air play isn't likely to book any arenas near me, so I don't guess I'll see him again anyway.
Thinking about Prince is just plain depressing these days. Wish I could quit coming to this site and occassionally Googling him for news. I always come away depressed. I guess I still have hope.

I have been defending this man since I was 11 years old. Why did he have to sing in a falsetto voice???Y???
