"Purple Medley"...thoughts I really loved this CD when I first got it about two years ago and just popped it in the other day and while I still like it, it is a bit overdone and too plastic when you hear the originals. I was just wonering what other people thought about this maxi single. Also, who did it come about? Prince's idea? Did it sell well? Etc.

It was the beginning of the end... with regards to his preference of "snippit-hits" for a live concert. *********************************************************************************************

I really enjoyed it at first. Then I went to the 1st Celebration. The Purple Medley must've been played 100 times over those 5 nights and by the end I wanted to SCREAM and hurt someone every time it was played. That cd has NEVER entered my cd player since...

It's good for when you need a tripple latte of Prince hits, but don't have much time. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I never understood why on earth this was released back then.
His fued with Warners had just flared up and he claimed the "Prince" persona had been "Disowned imperpetual". He wanted to look forward, release his music as o(+> and give Warners some Prince albums to fulfill his contract. So far so good. And then, all of a sudden, out of nowhere comes this turd. What's the meaning behind this? And why release this awfull thing that belonged on no album and featured only snippets of all the songs [which in a way demeaned his songs and persona more than WB ever could've done on their own]. I'm sure he wasn't pressed into releasing this by Warners cuz he'd given them all these albums, including Black, to release. Surely they could have done without this drivell of a supposed hits-remix single. Therefore I [perhaps wrongfully] conclude that it was one of Prince's vanity projects. A way of letting the people know one more time what he'd accomplished and just how many tunes he'd written that ended up on the charts, before going off and doing his thing on his own as o(+> Because, other than that, I can see no reason at all for this piece of crap to ever have been released. It's right up there with 1999 TNN. Or should I say "down" there. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I always thought this was some kind of promotional thingie for the box set, like it's something that he pooped out on the spur of the moment and for one hot minute thought "this is the best thing EVER!!!" and had it shuttled off to WB before he lost all interest in it and probably even forgot about its existence. I think it's chintzy, but a fun little curiosity/artifact - I think the b-sides medley is kinda fun (not saying GOOD - just saying FUN).

I loved it when it came out. I first heard it at that 1995 AMA's. Anybody remember that? They played that song along with a montage of his videos, and then he comes out of nowhere and does his thang. It was cool.
Oh yeah, I remember when this was on that Gold Experience uh, TV promo thing that htye had on VH1 when that album came out. That chick on the mission to meet her hero sneaks into the A/V room and plays that montage of videos and then we hear the song again. I guess the song is aiight. I mean, it never hurts to hear a nice medley of P's old hits and a good presentation of it. So the song eally sin't as bad as folks think. It was originally recorded for use as an 'intro tape' for
the Gold Experience Tour. A way for to get all the 'Prince' songs out of the way before the show started, a kind of "that was then..." before the "This is NOW!" hit so to speak. It was released as a single as a kind of afterthought. From what I can gather it was 's idea to release it as what he called 'a tour souvenir', and as a epilogue to 'Prince's' career. It was supposed to be the final release by 'Prince' before ''s' new material truly started to get released (...well, that was the idea at the time anyway.)

The version of Purple Rain is FAR better than the original. For this alone, I look forward to the re-recorded hits! .

He was cool that nite...it was his chance 2 run through the Gold Experience music and put it on display. The thing that I never got why it paused 4 a few seconds during the performance? cliche or effect it seemed odd...but that only led 2 the end of the show when everyone was singing "We R The World" Prince was next 2 Quincy Jones sucking on his lollipop not singing just going side 2 side...U see Quincy give him a look like why ain't U singing the song "this time" Prince begins 2 act like he's feeding the lolli 2 Jones, & Quincy takes the humor as he tries 4 it...funny Tv moment.
