what are you doing here?

i find it interesting how many Prince "fans" are still coming to this website yet they always state that they liked Prince up until 1988 or the last great Prince album was TGE or whatever.
i'm not looking to kick anybody off this website but why do many of you come here, especially onto this forum, and discuss Prince when you haven't liked anything about his music for so long?
do you fancy him? is this more a case of you liking him for his image or his looks than his music? do you like his new spiritual philosophy? his politics?

i'm trying to understand this so don't give me no lip. it's just a question.

What?
It's nothing to do with his image!
Yeah, a lot of us may not like what he's done since 1989 or whenever, but we all have the right to express an opinion of his work, positive or negative.
Jeez, don't let us get seperatist on here! And let's not start having conditions to the right to log on and voice an opinion.

I have all the 90's output with a lot of that era's bootlegs and I STILL think the '80s rules and the 90's suck!

Am i worthy???

Damn, u're post has just pissed me off in a small and insignificant way - but I'll get over it.

Love Prince's music, have done since "Purple Rain". Always interested in whatever he's releasing, even if it turns out to be dull drivel like "C.R.A.P".

Otherwise I think the guy's only other redeeming feature is the amount of staggeringly beautiful women he's pulled over the years. Not bad at all for a midget in make-up, who has the conversational ability of a brick at the bottom of a cesspool.

what the original question? i like his 90s output just as much as i like the 80s output. yes i admit that the end of the 90s got a bit shaky but that's ok cuz TRC i think bought him back to a level that matched his mid 80s work and the ONA tour was amazing.
and what do you expect from a guy who's nearly 50? he can't be singing about pussy all the time. he's growing up. let him.

I've bought everything Prince has brought out since '88, as i'm a fan.I feel he's just not as good as he once was, that's all.I don't have to justify my being here Milty.

Similarly, I discuss the original Star Wars Trilogy too on other boards, They finished in '83. Don't like the new ones half as much, should i not discuss them?

No difference IMO.

I love Woody Allen movies but I haven't liked the past four or five flicks he's put out. Does that mean I'm not a fan of his films anymore, even though some of his older movies are still some of my favorites? I'm sorry to be getting so bent out of shape, I guess I'm just not understanding the qualifications here...

For me there is no such thing as disliking all his albums since 1989 - It's a fact that at least one track on each album is good, from almost the entire of Gold Experience to "East" on N.E.W.S for me (Though I actually quite like N.E.W.S) - whilst it's true that today not every track on his albums are good, some always are - and that's why I'll always like the man, and that's while I will always come on this site - I like 2 know what he's doing, what other fans are thinking.

You've asked quite a difficult, almost to the point of stupid question, Prince is a very interesting person, and will always gather his fans together, and no matter what he puts out, they will always be his fans and usually always buy the album, even if it is crap - it's both a curse and a blessing.

I agree with anxiety here, it's a very annoying question to ask, who gives a fuck why we're here - it's what goes on here that counts - reflecting on the good times, finding out new facts about the kid, hearing other people's opinions. For me, the org has opened up a whole new side of Prince in terms of music, songs which I previously skipped over from day one have now become some of my favorite tracks because of what people have said about them on the org - take Friend/Lover/Sister/Mother/Wife.

You keep saying it's just a question, maybe it's none of your business.

I'd like to chime in on this without flaming. I have been a collector since the 80's. I haven't been a serious collector for about 10 years now. I'll tell you why I stopped (other than money issues). Prince started a feud with Warner Brothers (wether he was right or not is beside my point) and started to release sub par CD's to try to get out of his contract. There were definitely moments of brilliance on each of those CD's but nothing compared to earlier albums.

Then there are singles. I was a BIG collector of 12 inch and 7 inch singles. Most were great because of the non-album B-sides. Around the "Diamonds and pearls" era, the B-sides started to be nothing but album tracks or crappy remixes of the A-side. ("Horny pony" being the exception). Speaking of remixes, instead of one great extended version of a song (Like "Let's work" or "Kiss") he started putting 6 to 7 different remixes on the 12 inchers and most of them took away from the original version. Then he started to give away music only through a website. I missed a lot of stuff that way because I didn't have a computer until recently.

His musical direction has changed quite a bit as well. I have nothing against that, it's just gone in a direction that isn't what I like in his music. Instead of being funky it is now more of a light jazz feeling. Don't get me wrong I like some of the jazzy stuff too. I think "Rainbow children" is pretty good. However, even you have to admit "N.E.W.S." is the worst thing he has ever released. Like the post above this, "East" had it's moments of brilliance but that is about it.

In my opinion his newer stuff isn't as fun to collect. I will continue to buy his music when I see it but no longer actively seek it out as I once did.

Prince, personally, has always been eccentric but more recently has become even moreso. It's hard to take sometimes. That all started with the name change (I know it's back to Prince now). It was hard to explain to a casual fan why he did this. He lost a lot of credibility in doing so and lost main strem acceptance. Now it's the whole Jahova's (sp?) witness thing. I don't care what religion he is but people always ask me "Is it true? Is he going door to door in a limo?" I used to defend him now I just shrug my shoulders and say "I don't know, I just like his music".

I admit, I long for the old days and hold out hope that it may return to some extent. I am and always will be a Prince fan. It's just not as fun anymore. My favorite period is "For you" through "Gold experience" and then "Emancipation" and unless he releases something to be excited about, my favorite period will not change.

As to why I am here, it's because I just enjoy reading how others feel, wether I agree or not. I am amazed at how many feel the way I do though.

This is all just me and I am interested to hear how others feel. I hope this clears it up a little as to why I am here.

In the 80's collecting his music was a passion for me, then in the 90's it became more of a hobby.

I liken it to the first love of ur life - u may not be him/her now, but u still hold some little candle for them in the depths of ur heart.

Still, there have some okay stuff in the '90s, but for some reason i can't think of any of them right now.

And guess what I am listen to right now - Roseland, NY, ...dare I say it...from nineteen eighty eight!

YAY!

I couldn't agree more, although my favorite period is btw Dirty Mind and LoveSexy.
(And yes, he has recorded some really quality stuff after that too!)

Visiting the org is a bit like going to your local bar. You enjoy coming there, like a 2nd home, you might not always agree with everyone, but it's nice to have discussions and hear other ppls opinions.

It's a great forum - keep up the discussions!

You know, there's an interesting thing about Prince's more recent output...whereas back in the day, I could buy an album like Parade or SOTT the day it came out and love it on the first listen, these days it takes a LOT longer to warm up to his stuff...but the fact is, for me anyway, when I warm up to it, I REALLY warm up to it. It took me all the way up to last summer to appreciate "Rave", and that was only after hearing "Rave In2" for the first time, which I think is a great album and far superior ot "Rave Un2". I just recently started getting into "NEWS", which I wasn't crazy about when it first came out but for some reason, over the past few weeks I've really been getting into. And it took me YEARS to get into "Come", but now it's one of my all-time favorites. The gratification isn't so instant anymore, but every now and then, it's still there. I'm still waiting for that moment when I finally "get" NPS, though I'm guessing that day will never come. lol

no it's cool. i understand what you are saying about Woody Allen and such and i guess you apply that to Prince possibly; i don't know.
what i'm getting at with this thread is how those amongst us who really hate the 90s output still come here.
i agree that if you are a true fan you will always buy what is released, just like your Woody Allen analogy.

yeah NPS was hard for me too. you touched on a good point here about first listens and all that. i think that may (or may not) stem from the fact that people do listen to other music. i mean, my best friend used to be a HUGE Prince fan but now he really does not bother anymore. i told him once that the reason he is not a fan anymore is that he moved on as a music listener. he's a big fan of people like Kate Bush and Tori Amos - stuff like that. since Prince lost a bit of his consistency in the 90s, he moved onto other things to quench his appetite fpr new music.
i think that is where some fans went off.
