Will the new PR, UTCM and GB DVD's be Jehovah's-Witness-edited?

Just a thought I had... will he edit and tidy up the DVDs for his new beliefs? It would be awful if he did. What will become of Darling Nikki and Tick, Tick Bang!?

Did you know that there will be an edit?
Serious!
This leaked on the internet this week, the edited lyrics to 'Darlin Nikki':

I knew a boy named Larry
I guess u could say he was a God fiend
I met him in a hotel lobby
praying with a magazine
He said how'd u like 2 waste some time
And I could not resist when I saw little Larry grind

He took me 2 his castle
And I just couldn't believe my eyes
He had so many bibles
Everything that money could buy
He said sign your name on the dotted line
The lights went out
And Larry started 2 pray

Larry

The castle started spinning
Or maybe it was my brain
I can't tell u what he did 2 me
But my body will never be the same
His prayin' will kick your behind
Oh, he'll show u no mercy
But he'll sho'nuff sho'nuff show u how 2 pray

Darlin' Larry

Woke up the next morning
Larry wasn't there
I looked all over and all I found
Was a phone unmber on the stairs
It said thank u 4 a funky time
Call me up whenever u want 2 pray

Oh, Larry, ohhh

come back Larry, come back
Your dirty little Prince
wanna pray pray pray pray pray pray pray pray pray pray

Is Prince even having any part of the re-releases?

It never occured to me he would, I assumed it was a WB job.

And if it is just WB, maybe some cry-baby fams might shut their mouths for 5 minutes and thank WB for doing so, before they continue slagging them off for all Prince's mistakes in the past 10 years.

Yep. It's just a WB job.

However, don't get too friendly with those bastards yet - don't forget how shite the original GB DVD of PR is and countless other great films spewed badly onto shit DVDs for the first couple of years of WB DVD. Wankers.

I'm so sick of uninformed people like you spewing this kinda garbage about WB ... ok, so WB released a truckload of sub par DVD’s... why? cos it's in the best interest of a movie studio to release their intellectual property in low quality that ultimately no one wants?
If WB hadn't invested in the unproven DVD platform years ago with releasing as many movies as cheaply as they possibly could, THE DVD PLATFORM WOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN OFF.
When WB released these low-fi DVD’s years ago it was still better than the VHS copies you could buy, and WB at that time had no reason to assume that uninformed consumers like you would ever go out and buy a DVD player... they took a chance, invested in a new platform and potential new market... that is done by releasing volume at the lowest price point possible. Their original DVD release of PR never retailed for more than $15, I picked it up for $10.
Be happy that WB, now fully aware that it's strategy to invest in the DVD platform has paid off, is re-releasing *all* those early DVD releases in the quality we've come to expect from DVD’s and WB.

The original release of Purple Rain on DVD looked great to me. The picture quality and the sound seemed quite nice, i noticed alot more detail than the VHS version.

Sure, it didnt have many extra features, but it was the movie I was after anyhow.

As for sanitizing his movies, this is one case where I'm kinda happy WB owns this stuff. I don't think it would go over well with them at all to remove all the profanities from those flicks.

Thanks. What I was slagging WB off was for their sub-standard UK releaes. They were still releasing rubbish versions of films to Region 2 and doing special editions at the same time for Region 1. It caused a lot of frustration at the film magazines over here and held back the format for a few more years other here.

Have you got the Region 2 version of Purple Rain? It is shite. If WB had continued to release DVDs of that standard the format would never have taken off over here. People only started buying DVDs here when the DVDs started to be worth buying.

the one here is okay, for the cheap price. all it has is the trailer and the full screen version of the movie.

The region2 has worse sound quality than a video. It's neither widescreen nor full screen but that stupid inbetween that makes nobody happy. It was a bit pointless. In recent years they've dropped the price but they had to because nobody was buying!

The original Purple Rain DVD is from the exact same source as the VHS. If you had the VHS from '85 and the DVD you can easily see it's the same film print they used, if they even went that far...

Don't you think that's a bit harsh & agressive?

!?!?!

You don't know me, you're making some very big, and rather hostile, assumptions about me. OK, I'll go on the defensive - I bought a DVD player long ago, I work as a journalist writing about things such as...DVDs and the UK Region 2 DVD of "Purple Rain" is sub-VHS quality. The sound on it is awful. I am a HiFi expert and I expect high quality playback from my media. The DVD I am talking about does not deliver on sound at all.

It was shoddy looking releases like that which put off a lot of my friends from buying DVD players for many years. A lot of people I know only went out and bought players after I showed them exciting DVD releases that pushed the technology and actualy did something that VHS didn't.

... they took a chance, invested in a new platform and potential new market... that is done by releasing volume at the lowest price point possible. Their original DVD release of PR never retailed for more than $15, I picked it up for $10.

Back to my original post, it talks about UK DVD releases. These releases have only recently become cheap over here because nobody would buy them. WB improved their releases over in the US for their Region 1 releases but continued to release crap versions of the same films without the special features and quality of their Region 1 counterparts.

Be happy that WB, now fully aware that it's strategy to invest in the DVD platform has paid off, is re-releasing *all* those early DVD releases in the quality we've come to expect from DVD’s and WB.

I am happy that there's going to be a decent version of PR finaly. However, I have already bought Purple Rain on DVD at a higher price than the better quality VHS version. That is not good business practice. I'm glad they've raised their standards because I am one of the people who've been campaigning for years for them to raise their standards in the UK market.

That's a great question.

When Dean Martin's "The Silencers" came out on DVD in November of 2003, they cut out some PG-13-type T&A parts.

I have no idea what the reasoning was for doing that.

But I do know what the reasoning would be for editing and cutting out parts of PR, UTCM and GB.

Let's hope it doesn't go down like that.
