PrintableThe hunt is never over! I know I can get these things through the net but I love the packaging, the picture discs and even the bad info sometimes on these items. I finally found the Kaufleunten gig from 93 this weekend, I was really stoked. I also picked up the Late Night Shows Box set brand new for a great price. To me these items are excellent and I still have to dig and put a full day in searching. I dont always get time to do this but when I do, its like christmas. I dont know if these items will ever be worth anything but I would not put a price on them. I do have some CDRs but I like originals to much, I usualy buy anything I get on CDR in its original format eventualy. I dont have the time or equipment to spend on the net to download bootlegs, so I still have the fun this post was speaking of. Nothing beats finding an item you dont have, the moment you find something you have been looking for along time. That feeling is great, you almost look around the store like someone is going to snatch it from ya, then you casually run to the counter and head home to enjoy. | |

Hmmm. Actually there isn't, unless you're using a crap codec and most people are using LAME (or similiar) these days anyway. See what happens is that the MP3 format removes all the unnecessary information to human ears from the original file and further conversions have nothing to remove anymore. When you reconvert something back to wav it's essentially still the same MP3 data, but just in a different broader format. Converting that again back to MP3 provides no further loss (at least if it's been converted with the same settings and a typical codec). MP3 doesn't degenerate like tape copies. And what's more important, no hiss. There are however several other ways to screw up audio quality in conversions. And using one of those ancient codecs is certainly one. so you are saying converting wav-mp3-wav-mp3-wav-mp3-wav-mp3 is the same as a wav converted to an mp3 only once ? you might have a point there because there wouldn't be anything further to remove. but still the point is that it can NEVER reinstall those lost frequencies. you can never convert mp3-wav to its original form. It sounds logical, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Last year I did some tests with Lame, and you do lose some quality *everytime* you convert a WAV file to MP3. In 128 kbps ABR/CBR, it is obvious after 3-4 "cycles" (WAV->MP3->WAV) only. With better settings, it takes more cycles, but the quality deteriorates after a while, too (even in 320 kbps). I can do the tests again, if you want exact figures, but you get the idea. Olivier |
