While Trent has often cited Prince as a major influence, I personally don't see the comparison that critics have made between NIN's music and Prince's. But again, I do hear some similarity between the instrumentals on The Rainbow Children, and those on The Fragile.

They're technically prolific and pretty similar and both IMHO not too good producers... Everything they produce sounds like themselves instead of the person or band they're producing...

Care to explain your bizarre, seemingly unintelligent post a little bit? Posting a definition of the word "slander" is kinda silly, don'tcha think? We all know the definition. Just sayin'. wink

Anyway - yeah, I was gonna mention the Alphabet St. samples on Pretty Hate Machine (is it Ringfinger? I know it's one of the last songs...it's the car skidding and I think a couple other little bits). And I almost shit myself thinking that P remixed a NIN track and I hadn't heard it lo these years?! But thankfully, y'all cleared that up - thanks!

I remember reading this story waaay back in the nine-four, when it came out. I love the image of Prince speeding around in his car and listening to Broken, which is one of my all-time favorite driving albums. I've had 2 speeding tickets while listening to it and driving.

I've always thought it made sense that Trent Reznor was influenced by Prince, but I never was sure why. I think it is just because of the raw honesty and the emotion that comes through in their music.

I probably only like 5 or 6 NIN songs, but I really, really like those songs, so I guess I'm a fan.

The rules were, you were never to say the word 'Prince', you had to write down that symbol. You were never to look at him, or talk to him unless he approached you first, shit like that. So he shows up in a limo, wearing a fluorescent pink jumpsuit, giant hair, a cane, huge heels and a lollipop."

He imitates Prince in heels trying to jive walk a four foot frame. It's funny.

"And he's wearing the worst women's perfume you've ever smelt. So he's got two giant bodyguards with him and there was nobody there who was gonna fuck with him! It turns out he wanted us to remix a track and make it harder--apparently he had Broken in his car for a long time. So then I see him at the other end of this hundred yard corridor, and there's only me and him walking towards each other. So we're getting closer, closer and...he walks right past me. I couldn't believe it, I don't care who you are, that's bullshit."

-Trent Reznor (NIN), interviewed for Select Magazine, 1994

I think that Prince's notoriously elitist attitude may be his own personal defense system and a way to deal with his fame, but perhaps this time his ego got in the way of what could have been a potentially ground-breaking cooperative project with two amazing musical geniuses.

Don't EVER! call Trent Reznor a genius again. Thank you.

We've heard numerous stories like this from other celebrities too.Remember these crazy tales?

***Slash and Axl Rose see Prince backstage at the American Music Awards in 1990,they're like "What's up,Prince?" and Prince just walks right by them without saying a word.

***LaToya Jackson says that Prince once saw her and her family having dinner in a restaurant. She said "Hi",but he just walked right past them without saying a word.

I disagree. I think Trent Reznor's production skills are amazing and totally unique. Ever since he let go of Marilyn Manson, their sound has turned to shit.

i think part of p's act is to get people to focus on the music.
no one can be this much of an ass. if so, little wonder why he doesn't sleep most nights.
i always hear about the music keeping him up but he could just have trouble resting that big head on the pillow.

he's definitely something close to that. he made alternative/industrial for pop listeners. depeche mode, the cure.. all those cats that preceded him didn't do with their catalogue what he did with one album.

maybe it was just timing.. maybe it was just him being based here in the states.
