Sometimes I just wonder if Prince should not be held as the precursor of the Crap Art movement (http://crapart.spacebar.org/)

I mean, let's face it, a fair number of his songs were composed rather quicky...

You don't seem to realize that songs such as Walk, don't Walk, Diamonds and Pearls, Graffiti Bridge or TMBIW are good examples of "crap art" song writing. Really. (Crap art is a real movement in the US believe it or not).

Sorry, but I've had similar thoughts myself.

Remember when Prince's lyrics were sooo scandalous?

Now, they are nothing compared to so much of the lyrics written today.

Prince used the Lynn drum machine (HOW INNOVATIVE).

Now, many performers in the music business cannot even play an instrument. Can they even program the computers to make the music for them?

Prince is truly an artist. He took what was out there, and made it his own. He pushed boundaries and taboo's, but, in the process, did he open Pandora's box?

To me there is nothing wrong with a song that's got a good beat that I can dance to, but what I have always loved about Prince's music is that while you can definately dance and have fun to his music, there is a layer running through his music that is more than that. It seems that now, in "popular" music, that layer has been erased.

No sh*t. Compare the outright horniness of Dirty Mind to the placid, safe lyrics of his newer stuff. I suppose ones libido does cool with age...but that's no real excuse..

it's not that his libido has cooled & i think P state of mind isn't like "ourz". Musicians/Artist tend 2 think differently & gravitate 2ward the ecclectic & essentric rather the "normal" as we tend 2.

that's called being Prolific & tryin' 2 satisfy the Recording Industries $$$ making attitude. that's y Artist come up with their own Labels: NPG Records & what have u...


P may b in his 40s but he doesn't act like a 40yr old acts: working everyday like we do & tryin' 2 raise a family & what not...

I hear ya. It's great that he's releasing music independently..and he should evolve as a man.

that's a good point. if Musicians had the $$$ 2 promote themselves they'd do a whole hell of a lot better 4 them selves.

i think P should market thru a Major Label & from what i hear he makes more $$$ that way then doing it thru NPG Records but he shouldn't b included in this "Crap Art Movement"...

Interesting topic...but I wouldn't label Prince as a precursor or forefather or anything related to this movement. While he writes and records rather fast, he also is more methodical and puts more forethought into his efforts than the Crap Art movement suggests. Example: while Lovesexy may have been written and recorded in about a week, there were still antecedents. Eye No was a rewrite of an earlier version of the song, while he merely took When 2 R In Love from the Black Album.

Artists that are closer to this movement are Jad Fair and Guided By Voices (and maybe Jandek, if anybody knew anything about his writing process)

It would, however, be interesting to see what he could do if he recorded an album and confined himself to the philosophy of crap art...
