Prince made me a music snob...

Do you find yourselves highly critical of cookie cutter music based on your love of Prince's artistic expressions over the years? I was looking through a friend's CD collection and almost threw up when I saw Kenny G Cds...She claims to dig Prince, but I found myself questioning her musical intelligence...lol...I had to step back & check myself...Any other snobs in this forum?

Although Prince is nominated in the same category as Kenny G. for a grammy so don't be questioning her too much big grin

nobody else does it for me any more, thanx P sad he set the bar too high in:
number of volumes to collect
catchy tunes
tight funky band
compelling image
interesting gossip

I hate it when you really love a band/singer and they only have 2 albums, and you burn out real fast.

P definetly made me a snob... but I wonder if I was a music snob already somewhere deep down inside? wink

One thing I've learned to do over the years though is separate Prince's artistry from others. I mean, I really don't try to compare Prince to anyone else or anyone else to Prince. But I do find myself constantly searching for other "true" musical artists and not just the next flavor of the month that's getting air time on the radio.

I almost always buy music now with the mindset of whether or not the music I'm considering buying is something that I think I might still want to listen to 10 or 20 years from now. And I think that if I wasn't a Prince fan, I probably wouldn't be so particular about other artist's music that I collect.

I find myself like this a lot.. but I have developed an open mind towards a lot of different types of music.. u'd be overwhelmed to see my setlists each week.. everything to every culture.. and I am the first to admit, My musical background started with Prince, maybe thats where the open mind came from.. It was a strange thing for me to like prince, from my peers.. they thought it was odd, mainly because they only heard Kiss, WDC and all the hits, never actually read between the lines. They see this man performing his heart out on stage, and to them its an act from a person who doesnt look like themselves, and thats "weird" to them... but not to me.

I've tried to resist the "popular" dribble that pours out the speakers daily around here.. There is SO much beautiful music that doesnt get heard, because it doesnt have a dance beat, or there isnt a beautiful face with fake tits to back it.. Im out for real musicians, not staged performers.

Prince changed my musical tastes, but as for making me a music snob...no. My real taste is dorky and embarrassing, Prince can't change that fact.

Snob? For crying out loud I even don't buy anything that has ranked worldwide sales of over 30,000 copies except for the new annual Prince and Bowie efforts.

Radiohead? Don't even consider that music.

I have a terrible genius complex I think and that does come from my love of Prince. Most of the artists I choose 2 listen 2 ie Miles, Bird, Joni, Zappa, Coltrane, Hendrix are all viewed as geniuses in their field. I find it hard 2 settle 4 less a lot of the time. So I am a total snob I guess. boxed
