How much does Prince REALLY have in the vault??? A way to tell......

I surmise that Prince really has an empty vault. No unheard gems from 1982 laying around. No hidden masterpieces locked away at Paisley Park.

Why?? Because when Crystall Ball came out EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE SONGS HAD ALREADY BEEN RELEASED SOMEWHERE ELSE ON SOME BOOTLEG!!! The only one I never heard was "Cloreen Baconskin", and that's barely a real song!!!

Why were there no surprises???

Everything been released already that's why.

The Vault is a myth!!

something to the effect of there being lots of stuff(from the revolution days; 84-86) that was worked on and mostly completed that's never seen the light of day. She said it was a very prolific time for him, she didn't say anything about a "valut", but that he has them stashed away somewhere.
And she's very fammilar with the circulating bootlegs.

First of all, that was the purpose of the Crystal Ball Set: to release previously bootlegged material. Second, the vault of course doesn't only contain unreleased/not-bootlegged old songs (and there are, of course) but also new unreleased songs (there really aren't any bootleggs with studio stuff from after he went independent) and of course tons and tons of rehearsals adn live performances on audio and video.

Look at the list of tracks listed in any of the UPTOWN books and you'll know that the vault is filled with tracks. Some of them great, many of them... lets just say they are better off staying in the vault.

Speaking of The Vault... alot of this information is listed in the new UPTOWN book "THE VAULT". It is going to be the Funk Bible for alot of us for a while.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Well, last days I get two outtakes songs, I Miss U and Bluesy Piano Jam, and I must say they are marvellous. If Prince has songs like those in the vault, I think the vault would be paradise for me wink

I'm wondering if anyone knew about "Extraordinary",
"It's About That Walk", "Breathe", "About That Walk"
and "When The Lights Go Down", "Make Yo Mama Happy"
before they were eventually released??

Were they mentioned by uptown?

I've just checked DMSR again and see that the song
"Make Yo Mama Happy" is mentioned there with the
original recordingdate and all.

And I've never read any studiolists from beyond
1988. So they might have been mentioned.

Still, with the amount of songs Prince records,
even if there aren't more than the odd 40 songs
or so from 80-88 we haven't heard of yet, there
are bound to be a whole lot more from later
periods.

Think of 1997, 1998 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.
He hasn't released a lot of music in any of those
years.

I think he's just going nuts with all his own songs
and doesn't know what to release anymore.

Partly, he probably doesn't want to "waste" songs
on mp3 releases and wants them on decent cd's in
stores.

But that still seems to be a bit of a problem for
him.

I don't understand why it's so hard for him to
release more than 1 studioalbum into stores every
year.

Look at Ani Difranco for example, she manages to
do just fine with far lesser resources that Prince
can get to work for him.

So why?

Prince could learn a lot from Ani, but I guess he simply don't want to.

I think they're friends.

It's not suprising to me that Prince doesn't release out of his vault... he has said he doesn't like to "dwell on the past." And you know how obsessed he is with his new material. The vaulted songs he made in the 80s are probably just as representative of the past to him, as "When Doves Cry" is to all of us.

For someone who doesn't like to "dwell on the past" he sure likes to tour those tired songs.

Could he have meant something else when he said about releasing more when the industry dies?

Maybe he meant that when there's NO mainstream market to sell to...THEN he'll
HAVE to release the stuff.

I can't imagine Prince and Ani being "friend" per se. They probably got along well during their recording, but I don't think Ani is the type of woman to "surrender her discerning into his care and keeping, in subjection to the Wise One," as it seems Prince requires nowadays. Which is too bad, because I think Prince could learn a lot from her if he would let himself.

During the Celebration One, the tour guides noted that Prince had about 30 finished albums in the vault as well as many other songs, live shit, video, songs that did not go with any album yet! When asked if the 30 albums were finished, with artwork, mastered, ready to go she said Yes thats what Prince told her! Keep in mind these song do not matter until they see the light of day. We were also asking her how they were being stored, the right tempurature, digital..etc. and she did not know, all she said was 30 albums finished.
