Between those two, Bobby never impressed me. Prince's ability certainly is not without his own distinctive voice on the drums, he's better than most realize. But he never played that much - he programmed more. I'd like to hear more of him on the set than he has recorded so far. Touch, tone, attack, dynamics, swingability, creativity, sonic color and contrast, subtlety, complementing a song...Blackwell is extremely accomplished. ยบ [This message was edited Sun Dec 28 11:24:49 PST 2003 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. I'd say Prince's best drummers were Michael B or John Blackwell or Sheila E. Its hard to decide
Prince sucks at drums, he just doesn't have the arm strength to pound them drums. He just does that tired-ass COLD SWEAT drum beat all the time, I guess its the only drum beat he's mastered BUT..BUT..BUT I digress..he was BAD ASS on Madhouse 8 and on Crystal Ball(the song). Sheila for me was probably the best drummer he's had skill wise and all around pressence though. Michael B is AMAZING and I love his sound and John B for me is overrated. I haven't heard him play anything so far that Michael B couldn't do and Michael at least always changed his solos around. i somewhat agree. bobby z really established the sound of the revolution that most people are familiar with when they think of prince. its a good sound. he was solid and unique. he was very progressive when it came to composing drum parts. people say that prince wrote all of those parts, but i would not discount the influence of bobby z. afterall, those songs were written by prince and the revolution.

If we talk about his best drummer: - John Blackwell - Michael Bland - Sheila E. - Prince - Kirk J. - Bobby Z. Yep, that's the right order.

I like Prince's drumming, in the same way I like Stevie Wonder's drumming. It has character, and let's face it, it's nice to see our hero playing the drums whether there's someone there who could be doing it better or not. It's another chance to see Prince express himself.
I wouldn't really want Prince to play drums any more than he has done, but sometimes it's cool to hear him play. A whole album with his drumming would be interesting to hear, but John Blackwell brought so much to TRC that he'd be crazy not to keep him in the band for a long time. I'm not a big fan of Michael Bland. Too over the top for my liking, but then that was the sound unfortunately. Everything about that band was over the top, especially the appalling hair!
