Batman

I was listening to the Batman sound track recently, and after a while i realised that it is such a great collection of songs. As a sound track it is far better than Parade & graffit bridge.

I particularly enjoy partyman and scandolous.

Do you agree with my opinion ? if not why?

I bought it recently and I think its quite good. Scandalous is nice, and there's a lot of funk on it. It doesn't have Parade's weirdness or its short throwaway tracks but I think Parade is more of a proper Prince album and Batman is a slightly contrived commercial enterprise (or something like that.)

I think any of Prince's albums is way better than Graffiti Bridge smile

I love that album. I think it's not something extraordinary, but Prince took a lot of risks, trying to make something different, you listen to the album and it's true it's not his best album or a great album, but you feel no one except for Prince could have done something like this.
My favourite songs are

Batdance
Scandalous
Party Man
Trust
Vicky Waiting

It's a good album.

But don't you think 90% of the material recorded after Prince settled in and got his butt down on the seats at Paisley Park sounds so clinical and clean-cut?

prince wasn't too bad, but listen to Gold, Emancipation, Rave, NPS, even TRC to an extent - practically everything past the songs on SOTT recorded at PP sounds so cleancut.

I think the isolation of his own studio helped him cut off from other people, after 1988 it was never the same (the music).

but the first album that i liked for each song was Cahos and Disorder.

What about "the arms of orion"? i think that must be the most skipped-over prince song there is.

I don't think Arms of Orion is all THAT bad. Nice and simple laid-back song after Electric Chair and real "soundtrack" type of song.

Wedding Feast, Poom Poom, New Power Soul, Mad Sex, ... now these are skp-over songs, but not Arms of Orion, not to me at least!

Batman is a terrific album. It made me become a Prince fan in the first place. The hypnotic beat of The Future sucked me right in...

The song on Batman are good, but Vicki Waiting is the song on there that does it for me, I never get tired of listening to that song!music

I heart this album... The Futrue and Electric Chair are stellar songs to kick-off a stong album. Partyman remains one of my favorite anthems to this day.

Anyone see the SNL perfromance for Electric Chair?? P was looking FINE for that.

...all that being said, Parade kicks this albums ass in my opinion smile

I don't even classify this release as a Prince album. It's a movie soundtrack. These songs were specifically written in the vein of the characters personalities. Which is perfect for Prince, since he has been so many different characters. (Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, Christopher, Joey Coco, Camille.) In my collection it goes in the soundtracks only because I don't think he approached this like he would a "Prince" album. He approached it as "ooh, I get to play all of the characters..." I dig it with the exception of "The Arms of Orion" I just can't hang with that one...

Agreed. And "Arms of Orion" is just sterile and horrid. Perfect for dentists offices and the Adult Contemporary crowd.

Good album. Sorry to join the bandwagon, but Orion can keep his damn arms to himself.

It would've been cool if Dance With the Devil had been put on the album in it's place, as it's the one song he did that fits the best with Batman. I wonder why he decided against releasing it?

i love the batman album. it's the album that got me into prince. there are some stellar tracks on this album: 'the future', 'electric chair' (why didn't he put the extended one on there?), 'partyman', 'vicki waiting' and 'trust'. just think if prince would've been able to put 'dance with the devil' and 'rave unto the joy fantastic' on there instead of 'arms of orion' and 'batdance' (this should've been a b-side imo). would've been another classic album.

tim burton (director of batman the movie) had input in what songs would end up on the soundtrack. he didn't think 'rave' fit the project, so 'partyman' took its place. he probably had something against 'dance with the devil' too. that's why it didn't end up on the album..

One of the reasons I love Batman and look back fondly on it was it was the last time that Prince came out with some kick ass B sides. I love U in Me, Feel U Up, etc. were very cool. Since then, he doesn't want to put out much on b sides (i.e. "to whomever it may concern" was never a fav of mine).

Batman as an album is slightly flawed, but it is a great deal better than GB and head and shoulders above anything he's done since Emancipation. Yes, even better than Rainbow Chil'en.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Choas and Disorder is one of his very best albums. I'm not surprised.

Totally agree. This album is one that a lot of his fans never really like for some reason, but I always enjoyed it. Can listen to it straight through. Although I was a little surprised when Batdance went to number 1.

By the way, love the smooth vocals on Arms of Orion. I always loved Prince and Sheena's voice together.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

It's a good soundtrack but I don't think it reaches the levels of 'Parade'.
