Should I buy N.E. W.S.?

I have gotten a gift certificate for Xmas and wondered if I should buy N.E.W.S. Anybody have any thoughts on it?

Is it good or is it something like the 4 soundcheck things he put out on NPGMC and Xpectation or whatever that was called. Interesting at first, then a dust gatherer.

Help me obi wan kenobi! You're my only hope.

Oh and happy holidays (Merry Christmas, Chappy Channakah, Kwaazi Kwanza and a Rollicking Rama Lama Ding dong) to one and all!

Well, I maybe listened to it once. I sure wouldn't suggest you buy it, ...you nailed it by comparing it with Xpectation and calling it a "dust gatherer". At least it only takes up 76.9MB on my HD.

I am going to go against the grain here and say YES! At first few listens I was very take it or leave it. But after going to the gigs and hearing it before the show and listening to it since, I have come to love this cd!

I have it on at home quite a bit now and people always ask what cd I am playing, I ask them why and they say dunno I think I like it, it's different. Love watching their faces when I tell 'em it's Prince!!
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

I am going thru the same dilemna. Is it worth it?

Maybe it will be on sale after Christmas.

Sad that I am not sure if I want to buy a Prince album. I used to collect everything, including the b-sides to his side projects (Madhouse, The Time, etc.). Now, not so much.

Well, if you don't like CNOTE or Xpectations, don't expect to like NEWS. At least, I wouldn't think so -- I rather like CNOTE for those times when you want some rain falling and moody music...it's become a regular. As for the other 2? Dust-gatherers, along with ONA live...oh wait, that's one of the ones that got stolen, but I can pretty much guarantee that wherever it is now, it's gathering dust!

It depends on your personal musical tastes. If you like jazz, experimental music, if you liked songs like "17" on 1-800-New Funk, or "New Power Soul" on Exodus (NEWS is different from those songs, but I think they are close to it), BUY IT, and I must say I love that album, it's wonderful and it would be a pity if you don't have.

But, if you like only songs with Prince voice, most pop, or funky or rock songs, 4 minutes, chorus, a clear guitar solo, and things like that, don't buy it.

I wouldn't bother buying it.

It's pleasant, but it's not music you'll ever feel the need to listen to.

The question you need to ask yourself is "am I a Prince fan"? If you are, you should buy N.E.W.S. That doesn't mean you'll like it, but you should at least have it in your collection. I personally think it's oversold, underwritten, and unimpressive. But it's still in the collection. Purchase it, hopefully it will be your favorite Prince album!

Merry Christmas.

If you're a "niche fan" (thank you tricky99) who's only interested in pop music, and verse/chorus/verse/chorus vocals, instead of having the attention for nuanced instrumentals, NO. After "North" NEWS is gold.

i do agree with this statement but i also really enjoy listening to NEWS -- it's Prince -- it's the Prince of now -- the man has been playing/creating jazz for years and this is the first CD he's put out to us, his Fams, that's all jazz - creative/innovative jazz -- i defnitely recommend it

I would recommend "NEWS" if you also dig jazz-fusion type of music already. Otherwise your musical palette may be not able to handle it's colors.

If U can B open minded and except that he has moved on 2 other things then I'd say yes. He's always been able 2 pull off Jazz Blues Rock etc...whenever he felt the need. This is no different. The man's not singing on it rubs some people wrong but I say tough luck...

He branched out in many wayz and this is one of them. I can dig it seeing I'm a music head...its a different touch 2 a growing Prince collection.

Dig if U will...
