Around The World in a Day - something unusual

Anyone else notice P's croaky vocals on this album? It's not something i've really notice before, and it's not sung in a voice he's really used since. You notice this the most on the first couple of tracks.

I read he recorded this mainly while on the road for the PR tour, sounds like he was possibly a bit vocally tired to me.

P.S. I like this album, very trippy. It's gone up in my estimation recently.

Well, his screams on "Tamborine" and "Temptation" show no signs of vocal fatigue in my opinion. I did notice several different vocal styles within this album, but I believe these were done intentionally for the sake of variety.

I always thought this was one of his screamiest albums ever, to this day...and the vocals on "Condition of the Heart" are particularly strong.

every croaky vocal ,every piercing scream on that album was done purely with the intention of relishing the look on the WB's executives faces when he played them ATWIAD for the first time, our Princey does like to have his fun

Prince's vocals have always seemed a bit 'creaky' and quirky to me. It's his style.

He never did have the greatest voice.

You mean that badly recorded distorted voice? I am glad he has not sounded like this since! smile

I think it just adds to the creeping sense of paranoia that's all over the album.

It's like he's freaking himself out.

I think his voice is a freak of nature. I can see how it can be a bit grating to some, but good lord. Sometimes the noises that come out of that bony little body frighten me.

I agree wholeheartedly. I talked about this in another thread. While I don't think he has a particularly great voice, he is unquestionably an extradordinary vocalist.
