Prince and his early rapping

just listening to 'If A Girl Answers' for the first time and if i'm correct, this a rap song.
did Prince write this? if so, then it must be considered early Prince rap-nonsense.

If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up) is a GREAT, classic track! I used to know all the dialogue by heart. I thought it was just so loverly, bitchy mean. biggrin

I grew out of it, though. mr.green

I still know the whole song off-by-heart.

I remember taking the CD into an office party I worked in, in about 1997/8 and showing my self up by doing it karaoke stylee. disbelief

Yes, I think that is Prince on that track and he pretty much wrote everything back then. That is a fun song though.

Off the top of my head- the first real rap that I remember hearing from Prince was on The Latest Fashion, back in 1990.

Wuttabout Dead On It?

Or Housequake?

Or (okay I'm reachin') the rap in the 12" version of Love or Money?

Or the end of Let's Pretend We're Married?

I don't know remember what his first rap song was but "If A Girl Answers'' was a fun song.
"Annie Christian'' is a kinda/sorta rap song, at least it's a cousin to rap, anyway.
Maybe that is his first rap song.
Did the raps on Diamonds and Pearls (Daddy Pop, etc.) come before the Black Album rappin?
Just wondering.
Peace

I'd honestly overlooked these instances in another thread where I mentioned I didn't like Prince's incorporations of rap.

Somehow these work for me, maybe because while they could be called rap, they didn't entail some phony incorporation of Prince's perception of the "hard, streetwise" hip hop aesthetic or that fake-ass "M.C. Hammer-meets-Nice & Smooth" vibe Tony M. was jocking.

Ain't that the truth, Ruth! Prince and Stevie Wonder (remember his rap in "Do I Do?" Homey redeemed himself by admitting in the song: "I know I can not rhyme...") need to leave it to the pros.
