Larry Graham... Is all the hate real?

When you listen to Sly when Larry Graham was there or his own group Graham Central Station you know the man is funky as hell... well, as heaven (sorry LG). Why all the hate? Because he brainwashed Prince? Because he's a J.W.? Because he's ugly? Because he's funky? Why?

Because certain people don't like Prince's current religion, and since they refuse to believe that their beloved wants to be a JW they blame it on Larry.

He leveraged Prince's soul. Hate's a strong word. It may be an appropriate word, though.

I think he's hated as a person, as a musician he's well respected.

I don't have any hate for LG, though yeah - people on here tend to think less of him due to his role as Prince's JW Yoda figure. While I would have been happier to see P hang out with Tina Turner and become a devout Buddhist, I'd like to believe that he has the free thought to embrace whatever faith he chooses, Larry or no Larry.

Because People are afraid that Larry's eyebrows are going to swing down and crush them? Because the white suit needs to be sent to the cleaners? Because the jump suits that Larry wears while off stage are from the late 1970s? These are some off the reasons I heard while waiting to get into a Prince show.

Larry deserves more respect, he was part of one of the greatest bands of all times, he was an innovator on his instrument of choice not to mention one of the all time greats on the bass.

Prince is an adult who chose to become a Jehovas Witness himself, his life and his decision.People assuming Larry's partly responsible are naive.

Larry did appear to hog the limelight from Prince in concert though. That annoyed me a bit, though that was Prince's decision too i guess. shrug

The Larry-bashing is tiresome IMO.

The media brainwash over the JW religion is simply unreal.

It's not a cult, and Prince wasn't brainwashed. No one is ever brainwashed, that doesn't happen. If you choose to read the scriptures and it doesn't feel true to you, then you simply move on and that's the end of it.

It's just a harmless, peaceful religion that a person chooses to believe.

Prince obviously looked into the religion and saw something that really spoke to him, so what's wrong with that?

If it makes him happier and brings him inner peace, I say it's good that Larry happened to show Prince something that he's perhaps needed all along.

Basically, it really doesn't matter that Larry happened to be the person who showed him the religion, because if it connected so truly with Prince, becoming a JW was probably inevitable.

I don't mind people taking the mickey a bit, but when the hate stuff starts (and some of it is real, definitely) it gets a bit weird. If Prince became a JW it's because Prince wanted to become a JW. There's a lot of people out there who seem to think he's hypnotised Prince. Some of the people who hate Prince's recent output seem to shift the blame to Larry. Only Prince is responsible for Prince's actions.

Another thing that freaks me is how upset people get about him being a JW. He's always been a bible-thumper and whilst I am not a practioner of any religion, I can respect it. "The Cross" alwasy moved me because of Prince's sincerity and passion. Dito TRC. I don't believe in that religion but I can dig hearing Prince singing his heart out and speaking his mind.

Hmmm.

Any JW's here wanna confirm what the figure is, it's something like 84,000, or 144,000 or something like that, of people that will be saved.

If you could expound on that, it would be helpful because I am sketchy on it, and don't want to put words in your mouths, but what happens to everyone else?

I believe God loves and treats all of us equally, because we all are God - drops of the ocean.

That's what the earth is for. I have no desire to be in heaven. The earth was created to be inhabited. So if 144,000 are chosen to go to heaven, then the rest of us have the hope of living on the earth.

What about the scripture that says..."I saw a multiude that no man can number"...?
Believe me, I have no desire to live in "heaven" either, but I think that it is ridiculous to say that God has a set number of people that are allowed into heaven and then he's closing the gates. Can't the number be symbolic and referring the the 12 tribes of Israel? 12x12 is 144? A lot of the Bible is symbolic you know...esp Revelation.

This multitude refers to us. The great crowd. We have the hope of living here on earth, forever. There are several places where the 144,000 are mentioned: Luke 12:32; Rev. 14:1,3; 1 Cor. 15:40-53; and Rev. 5:9,10
Here are some other scriptures that support the fact that regardless of what mankind does, the earth will never be destroyed or depopulated: Eccl.1:4; Isaiah 45:18; Psalms 78:69.
Many make the mistake of thinking that the number 144,000 is alienating everyone else. But the earth was created to be inhabited forever. This was God's original purpose, and we all have a chance to be a part of it. wink
