Lovesexy - Difference of opinion of this album in different countries/regions?

I know here in the UK Lovesexy was a big album, and is still regarded as a great Prince record.

Most people (at least in my experience know of it, and definately know the cover) - I think it was an album that the general public caught onto here - very much in the same way that Diamonds & Pearls did.

I know it performed very badly in the U.S. (worst selling album since Controversy I remember reading).

Do you think this has affected the view of the of the album by fans in the respective territories at all, in your opinion?

Most of my friends were lost on Lovesexy...however they have all since seen the light.

The initial opinion to the album here in the US has most likely changed for the better.

I am a Canadian and longtime fan... Lovesexy was a ahead of its time in North America. Had it been released in early 90s it would have done much better. The title track Lovesexy was amazing in my opinion along with Anna Stesia being the best track on the album. The 12 inch version of Alphabet street was pretty slick and funky. My opinion is that it got more club play than radio play as North American radio was too conservative to give it much play.

It also didnt help in the fact that there is no break between songs on the CD. So is a pain in the ass to hear a specific track when you have to search 17 or so mins into CD to find the start of a song.

I'm UK and I remember quite a few folk in my year at school had that album, and there was plenty of media coverage and presence. In fact, 'Alphabet St' is one of his best known songs over here, along 'Purple Rain' singles, 'Sign O The Times', 'Get Off' and 'Sexy Motherfucker'.

UK. I think, as with all music, it's a matter of personal taste which I suspect knows no geographical boundaries, although I recognise it could be influenced by prevailing fashion culture.

Since purchasing the LP (complete with acompanying promotional alphabet boxer shorts!) on its first day of release, I have preferred previous releases to Lovesexy. For example, I continue to find 'Sign O' The Times', as its officially-released predecessor, more musically satisfying.

It's always hard 2 pick one album I seriously love more than the rest, but I would HAVE 2 say Lovesexy, as not only was the music great, so was the vibe, the tour (my 1st) etc, etc - was a HUGE time 4 Him in Europe, and u couldnt open a paper each day without some story being in there about Him (anyone remember THAT story about the cemetary and the bees!) falloff

THIS is MY fave Prince album, because it MEANS something 2 me. I dug the whole package. It meant something 2 me then, and it still means something 2 me now.

I said it on another thread, but ATWIAD, LOVESEXY and TRC are maybe not the most popular of albums amongst fans, but personally, I think they are his most pivotal and challenging releases.

U got those shorts 2 huh Langebleu? I still got mine! big grin (dont wear em stil tho - thought Id point that out!)

Apart from nude image on cover, I can't remember this generating much interest or airplay in Australia. Alphabet Street made minor impact on charts. Since there was no tour to support this album (or any until D&P) public interest certainly died down. Batman sparked things up again for a short time, and that was thanks to the movie. Lovesexy in Australia was an album for the fans in for the long haul, not the general record buying public, IMO.

When I first bought the record I thought that Prince had lost his mind..again! But after listening to it throughout i thought it was great. Prince was the creator of the whole positivity movement in the late 80's. The tour for the record was astounding!! There is a professionally made video of the show that was made for holland television.
look for it . Awesome

I reckon a tour helped this record a lot, those countries who didn't get one, just didn't "get it" with this album.

MrLovesexy

I don't think its brokedown so huge as a sure thing in terms of countries & regions as its more of a mix of people... no matter where there from either getting it or not, regarding the album.

I felt Diamonds & Pearls was more radio friendly at least in the US, seeing it had "singles" that were more fit 4 radios standard. It sold well enough and put the spotlight on his project.

Both had tours that were fantastic extravaganzas in terms of the stage props etc...a true spectacle. In a Prince fashion. But I think 2 feel the true impact & 2 have that Lovesexy completeness & insight, the tour was a most... the second half supporting the album 4 me ended the book 2 that era.

LOL

I've never worn mine, mainly because I seemd to acquire a pair which had been made to fit Prince himself rather than me in 1988 (or any time thereafter).

smile

(What you had to say about the personal significance of the release - timing, seeing him live for the first time etc.. also plays a part in my view of Lovesexy compared to earlier releases, I believe.)
