God, I thought "The Very Best of Prince" was the definitive greatest hits. This is just getting silly.

Okay, will SOMEONE please tell me what is the difference between a 'fan' and a 'fam'. Is this just more stupid lingo from P? In his Gold Experience special on VH1 a few years back, Prince criticized the word "fan", arguing that it was short for "fanatic". So as an alternative, his loyal listeners started using the term "fam" as a shortened form of "family", which seemed more pleasant. There used to be an independent publication called "The Prince Family Newsletter" that was published in the mid 90s, and the whole "family" idea may have been derived from that. Nowdays a "fam" generally means a really obsessed fan, to the point of disillusionment. And fans went back to referring to themselves as "fans", because Prince's little word play got to be too silly to take seriously... [This message was edited Thu Dec 18 9:24:33 PST 2003 by Tom] I think Tom is right about the origins of the word "fam''. I think folks should consider giving Prince a little credit here, though. Seems to me he was trying to not only set a better tone for his supporters/fams, but to avoid calling them fanatics himself, fans for short. Where it went from there, who could have foretold. Peace

Ok, if a new "Best Of" is released wouldn't this be through Warner Bros. who he no longer has any ties to? Why would he promote something for them to make more money? Unless he's doing this as part of that Purple Rain 20 year re release? Or... Sigh, "A Best of Prince on NPG records"? Please Lord... not that, anything but that; I'm just a baby; please God No. My name is Prince and I want your money

Where it went from there, who could have foretold. Peace Do fams actually exist? A fam being a completely obsessed and blind fan? I've never encountered one. I just encounter the term thrown around as a way to pidgeon-hole somebody - "Why do you hate on Prince so much?" (a legitimate question) "Here go the fams again. Prince can do no wrong!" Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Ahh, questions questions...
As always, there are many possibilities, many projects on the boil. Things change, albums are shelved etc. The one thing you can be certain of when it comes to Prince... and that is nothing is certain, until it gets released.

Even when it's on the shelves in the shops. Even when you pay for it and take it home. Even when you hold the product in your hands, in your home with the cd in your player, you still feel suspicious. You still expect the whole cd to just combust and disappear into thin air. The only thing left will be an evil kackle floating through the air. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

A good idea I think.
Hopefully a hit single, album and what about a live hits dvd! In excellent quality even!

Can't be true -- why would Prince put together a best of album filled with songs owned by WB *and* throw in a new song on top of it? Unless this "best of" album is to be his best independently released tracks since 1996 or so. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. I've heard the term "fam'' used both ways -- sometimes negatively and many times as a matter of fact way/accepted way to refer to what we commonly refer to as fans.

I don't think that Prince would think of a Greatest Hits Tour as a step backwards. He might know that people might think that, but he just doesn't give a shit.
If he wants to do it, he'll do it. Fine. And personally, I think with the Hall of Fame introduction coming in 2004 and the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain AND considering his comments that the current shows are a practise run for his band, he might have a lot in the works for next year.

They've released the Greatest hits to death, they need to stop dwelling on them and release the unreleased recordings which in some cases are better than released versions

I think Prince likes to call his Fan's Fam's because it is short for Family and he said that they are like Family. However, true prince fans hate being called Fam's because it is insulting to our intelligence because if you had family that treated you like prince treated his fans you wouldn't want them visiting very often. Some fan's do like to be called Fam's, these are the fans that love everything he does without question. Don't get me wrong, I like most of his stuff and am in no way complaining about his back catalogue. But Fam's would love a new best of because it would be Prince, they would love it if he released Prince Farts Prince: A Collection of Hits Farted From The Purple Poo Shoot. It were proper bo I tell the!! Bo Selecta!

Well... let him do a greatest hits "Live!"
We all know that's what sounds the best, and it hasn't been released before... unless... Oh god... I've just got a brainwave... Remember when he asked us to send him bootlegs? What if he's collecting the (in his eyes) best live versions of the hits... and puts them on cd? I'm not sure I would like that... I rather have him play the songs with the band he now has... but that's my opinion. _______________________________________________________________________________________

Another compilation full of songs like When Doves Cry and I Would Die 4 U?
Oh boy...Talk about overkill... Maybe they'll all be re-recorded with his new band? I wouldn't like that either, but at least then they'd be more fresh. [This message was edited Mon Dec 22 5:33:09 PST 2003 by PurpleKnight] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
