Prince's love for Detroit..?

Does Prince love or hate Detroit? Why?

from Dance On-- "Detroit what time is it?"

Beautiful Night---"Do the Detroit crawl.."

I've never been to Detroit is it as bad as it looks in 8 Mile?

Yeah, everytime he comes here, he gives much love to his 2nd home (as he calls it).

Early in his career Detroit was one of the main cities where his record sales were high, so he always shows the city a lot of love.

Back in the day I had a friend who had some cousins that grew up in Detroit. They were all huge prince fans...they used to tell me what it was like being in the Motor City when prince was at his peak! woot! I don't know how they people of Detroit fell about prince's music these days...
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

We in Detroit still Love Prince. At I think the HitnRun show Prince was talking about a DJ from here who played all his music back in the day when radio was cool. It was great that he went back and memention Mojo and how Detroit was his second home.

As it was mentioned, Detroit was down for the lil' man from day one. And thanks to d.j.'s like the Electrifying Mojo, who used to play Prince and George Clinton records one after the other after the other for hours on end, us Detroiters sure got our fix back in the day. And this was BEFORE he crossed over with 1999 and Purple Rain.

And as for the question about how Detroit looks--well, Detroit has always been a media/movie scapegoat. Yes, there are parts of Detroit that look like crap, as there are in any major urban city. But the scenes in "8 Mile" continue to perpetuate the myth WAY more than the reality. I have had lots of friends over the years come to Detroit from other cities and were practically in shock at how beautiful, funky and hip we can be. nod

As for how Detroiters feel about Prince these days. . .well, WGPR is pretty much the only station that plays new Prince music. I've only heard positive feedback from those listeners. And we continue to give props to the fact that he is an amazing live performer. I believe he has sold out every show he has done here at least since 1996 and the Emancipation Days (although Act I sold out, too--I can't remember if he came here between Act I and Emancipation?).
