Count me with the TRC lovers also.

Not only was it a fresh record, with Prince trying something different and daring again, but it was also the first album that was marketed the correct way by Paisley Park imho; like the alternative record it was meant to be. There was a nice build-up, with the listening parties at the Celebration, then the internet single on Napster, and then later the album with the second internet single She Loves Me 4 Me. Then, during the ONA tour, lots of songs from this album were performed live to boost interest in the album.

Around the time of the concert here in Belgium, I saw people in music stores buying The Hits and TRC or SOTT and TRC, or just plainly checking it out. It was the first time I saw this and actually thought by myself: 'go ahead then, buy it, you're gonna love it!' (At the time of NPS, I thought the exact opposite lol...)

So whether you hate it or not, I think it's hard to deny that Prince actually tried something different (whatever you think of the result). Anyway...

No matter how many times I listen to TRC I just can't "dig" Everlasting Now & Last December. Live versions of these two songs did even less for me while the rest of TRC improved with the live versions.
Mellow in particular was one I didn't appreciate until I heard it live.
I'm still listening to TRC on a regular basis.

I don't 'hate' it anymore, but i still don't like it. I can appreciate it for the 'concept album' it is and i appreciate prince beeing focused. However.
The lyrics omfg
Da Voice omfg omfg
The lyrics omfg omfg omfg
Some of the music is ok, but it's burried behind and under the BS. Also, the music is nothing special, many people can do that. I can appreciate the songs in a live setting with lotsa soloing / improv, but as album tracks...sub-par.

Finally, i'd like to say that i'm happy prince made the album, it shows he still takes on ambitious projects and can b really motivated to make 'his' music. It's only that i don't find 'his' music that special these days. And the lyrics of course! And Da VOICE Voice voice ... voice Voice VOICE
"It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

I THINK TRC IS GREAT nod
The first few minutes into it, I thought of Miles. I believe he would be proud to see Prince's growth as a musician. I admire the fact that Prince passionately wrote and produced a record that he knew would not be very popular. I've heard some people on this thread refer to Prince not being in tune "to what's currently out there". Why should he be?? He influenced a lot of it!! P ain't trying to go backwards. I think TRC is great just like many other Prince records in the sense that it sounds like nothing else "out there".

originally didnt like it, put off by the first track with images of JWitnesses singing 'rise'. Also, a feeling that the lyrics were the most important thing and he had wrote a contrived melody to make them fit. But muse 2 the pharaoh (the best on the album) brought back faith even though it sounds like 70s stevie wonder with the fender rhodes.

why 1+1+whatever? a return to cheesy keyboard funk (NPS) which is well trodden path. And last december - belongs on chaos and disorder.

i appreciate it a lot more now for its dynamics and variety but have to be near my cd remote control.

A geezer behind the counter in HMV told me to buy TRC (I was buying the Batman soundtrack at the time.) He said the weird religious lyrics could be ignored. I was wondering if the divisions within the org over this album run vaguely on religious lines. Do any of you more secular orgers love this album? And does it have funky or rocking guitar playing in it?

I love TRC, and I can say that I'm quite (read: very) secular... I just think of the album as a story. I also love LoveSexy and most of P's spiritual songs: God, Power Fantastic, And God Created Woman, etc.

I must admit, when i first heard it I hated it with a passion, even a good old rocking track like Last December was a load of shite. But with the release of ONA..live saved it for me, musically brilliant and lyrically disappointing, but the music still shines.

When I'm in the right mood it's great. It's certainly one of the essential Prince albums-- a landmark if you will. Along with 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, and Sign of The Times these are the albums I would consider must-haves.

The only other album of his I would compare this to musically is Parade (the first 4 or 5 tracks where he recorded the drums for all of them at once). The flow is beautiful. Only with TRC, the music is much stronger and there's also a story to go with it.

It's a shame people feel uncomfortable with the lyrics but whenever you're saying something of substance, wrong or right, somebody is bound to react negatively. So be it.

Yes, it just has a bad vibe about it. It is way too preachy and not very fun. I don't hate it, but I sure don't like it.

it's shame if they (still) do.
It does not matter really if they do, because it does not change the fact that TRC is enjoyable to you. And to me. It helped me through some tough-ish times. How can the fact that anybody who dislikes it make any difference to my enjoyment of it? It has also taught me a thing or two.

But maybe you meant 'shame' with reference to the people not liking it, and not to the album, MoF?

thx anyways,

such conflicting views

i love it to bits.

and wedding feast rocks. it's so beautiful and powerful but funny at the same time (prince giggles at the end)

i can't understand people hating it. the only critisism that i can't begin to grasp is the fact that the sound is very plain and timeless rainbow sounding in comparison to most of prince's albums but the music does it for me.

i think the only voice over it could do without is the exstention of the work pt. 1 because it drags on a bit but the rest fits with the music perfectly, 1+1+1 is 3 for example.

it's my favorite prince album

I love the album. It took a 3rd listen before it really clicked for me, but it is one of best albums. The only thing that I'm not into is Wedding Feast, but I can't imagine not having in it's place now.

A lot of people hate the voice over, but it makes the album for me.
