Do heaps of people still hate the rainbow children? There used to be alot of threads about how much people hate it and then others would always reply by saying give it another try.
have all those people given it another try or are they not as proud of their hatred? Have some of you had a revelation?

I have no problem with the Rainbow Children. The night I bought it, I played it straight through with out previewing the trax first which is really odd for me. Its the next Prince album that lived up to the hype,in my book, since the Gold Experience. I love it.

I gave it a second listen after hearing some tracks performed live on boots. I still have issues with the rhetoric. My opinion hasn't changed - great music, dubious lyrics. I won't be rushing to listen to this disc again. All orgnotes and emails requesting trades or how to acquire bootleggage will be ignored. - The ThreadKiller -

I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate it - I just dislike it intensely!
I have yet to manage to listen to the whole thing all the way through in one go, I find it too samey, it's a nice groove but it doesn't really change and it sounds like I'm listening to a 78 minute extended version of one song. I have tried (quite a few times) to get into it, but after about 45 minutes I'm about ready to pull my teeth out with a rusty pliers. Having said that, I have listened to all the tracks individually (thanks to my AutoDJ) and with the exception of Wedding Feast I think they're all pretty decent songs. I just don't think it works particularly well as an album as there's not enough variety in the music. And that tired old voiceover...yeuch. And the lyrics...double yeuch. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

hmmm...The Rainbow Fiasco, huh?...
no matter how you slice it, it's still 20 of the 40 minutes of my life that I won't get back...the other 20 was wasted on C.R.A.P. so, yeah, I guess you can say that I hate it...

such conflicting views
i love it to bits. and wedding feast rocks. it's so beautiful and powerful but funny at the same time (prince giggles at the end) i can't understand people hating it. the only critisism that i can't begin to grasp is the fact that the sound is very plain and timeless rainbow sounding in comparison to most of prince's albums but the music does it for me. i think the only voice over it could do without is the exstention of the work pt. 1 because it drags on a bit but the rest fits with the music perfectly, 1+1+1 is 3 for example. it's my favorite prince album

I could do without the voice, but love the album to bits. It is clearly the best album he has come out with in the last decade. And I will not retract that statement. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

It's easily his best album since 'The Gold Experience', IMO.

Never hated it. I think it's a masterpiece. Some of the lyrics bug me, but the music is better than most of the shit on the billboard top 100.

I think "hatred" is a bit too strongly formulated, as is "heaps of people". Altho' some may truly hate it, definitly not all do and I think that the term "hate"should be reversed for more serious matters. Most that don't like it don't like it due to the lyrical content. Most think the music is really good. [This message was edited Wed Dec 17 6:36:46 PST 2003 by Abrazo] You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

[This message was edited Wed Dec 17 6:36:46 PST 2003 by Abrazo] yeah. i shouldn't have used such a strong word but I have heard many people use such words when describing TRC LYRICS: "All the players' ice melted into one platinum chain and in a downward spiral they dripped down the drain" and the rap in muse 2 the pharaoh rock although i can understand not liking the content of the lyrics, poetically it is some of his best work ever

I like that line about the player's ice too, but not the rap in muse. I also think the content of poetry is inherent to its quality. You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

I don't hate it, nor am I especially crazy about it. I like the live versions on ONA Live better than I like the original studio album versions. The Vegas DVD version of 1+1+1=3 kicks ass, I think. But the album, I dunno, I've probably listened to my copy under ten times. I can't get with the narrator. Reminds me of Fat Albert trying to sound like Darth Vader.
The "controversial" lyrics don't really bug me. I see what has people upset, what with Family Name and all, but come on. We all know Prince isn't exactly Professor Griff. I've never taken his socio-political stuff seriously because it's always been so inconsistent ("America" vs. "The War"? cheez!), and he'll be singing to a whole 'nother choir in a few years. I think it's a better album heard live than it is as a studio project.

Bad bad bad, bad bad bad, bad bad: BAD BAD BAD. That pretty much sums up my opinion of TRC. It was his worse project ever (even worse than NewPowerSoul). I understand that the man put a lot of time and energy into it; but the over all product is horrid. IM embarrassed to be a Prince fan when IM asked about it. My DC Direct wishlist: 1) Bane, 2) Prof Zoom, 3) Superman Blue, 4) Kilowag, 5) Parasite

I particularly like the warmth of the studio sound of this album. You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

I like it a lot. Its a return to form for me. Its totally fresh and the lyrics don't bother me in the least. Its leaps and bounds better than Rave, NPS, and High imo. I can see how some people don't dig it (everyone I've played it to absolutely hate it and think that I and Prince have totally flipped our lids), but I get and enjoy it and thats all that matters to me.

I love TRC for the record.

Like every Prince record, there's something to love. On TRC the most interesting thing is how 'organic' and uncontrolled the music feels. That's new for Prince, I think. Usually his song/band structures are just so tight.
Overall though I strongly dislike Rainbow Children. The lyrics are horrendous and TRAGIC, considering where Prince has been and what he's come from. Another great soul lost to the Jesus people. The other thing is I get this sense that Prince is older now and he wants to purposefully do more 'adult' music. So he's turned to Jazz. Unfortunately, because of Prince's isolation or whatever, Prince's idea of 'jazz' turns out to be Kenny-G ish 'lite-jazz' crapolola (or is late period Miles Davis?). It's unbelievably bad. You look at TRC and NEWS and it's mindboggling ...Oh, how the mighty have fallen! He's doing lite jazz-funk now...Say it isn't so! There's so much great, experimental, NEW music out there. And NEWS or TRC may want to present itself as part of that conversation, buy they aint. Prince aint listening to what's 'out there', just what he might have heard on the (smooth-jazz) radio. His willfull isolation has hurt him personally (jw-crap) and musically (bad smooth-jazz-funk crap presented as experimental works)...one wonders how the man can be saved from these tragic fallings.
