Speaking Of Prince Samples....

Have a look at this article from back in May 2000 (and it was advertised on the Rave DVD and on L4OA website b4 this as well). Great article. Guess it's one to file with TCI?

Prince Prepares "Sampling CD Series"
05.30.2000

Prince

Producers, DJs, and the general public will soon be able to be able to order a seven-CD set of Prince samples directly from the man himself.

The discs in the "Newfunk Sampling CD Series," individually titled "Bass," "The Human Voice," "Guitar," "Keyboards," "Loops & Percussion," "Sound FX," and "Orchestral," not only spare music producers the trouble of combing through Prince's prodigious output for sounds, but also help to encourage legal use of the artist's samples.

Instead of full-length songs, the Newfunk CDs offer hooks, beats, and much, much more culled from various Prince songs, including a few well-known works from his '80s heyday: "Kiss," "Raspberry Beret," "When Doves Cry," "Erotic City," and more.

RealAudio tidbits from the CDs, as well as more information about the set, can be found on Prince's Web site at www.npgonlineltd.com.

For a one-time payment of $700, producers will be able to sample the works featured on the CDs without fear of reprisal, being sued for copyright infringement, or having to pay additional royalties.

The "Sampling CD Series" will be made available to consumers through Prince's Web site www.1800newfunk.com or through his toll-free line, 1-800-NEW-FUNK. A release date has yet to be set.

Yes.

When some people enquired about availability (i.e. How do I send my money? When is the release date? When I send my $700, how soon will I receive it? etc., they were informed that the item would be shipped (or prepared for shipping) when orders of some ridiculous magnitude had been received. Effectively, it was suggested that the project would only truly see the light of day if a minimum of thousands of people were willing to pay $700 in advance. As it was, the project never reached the point of 1-800 making it possible for people to place an order.

Whether or not the minimum advance order scheme was what had really beem planned all along, or it was just a reply from 1-800 to account for the inertia following the raising of expectations of another release ...?
