RIP Uptown

Issue #60 in January will be the final edition of Uptown magazine, the internet near enough killed it off.

Supposedly a 700+ page annual yearbook (Combining Days Of Wild, Turn It Up etc) will replace it but who is going to keep paying out for massive book each year just for a few extra pages update?

There's a yearly Bowie encyclopedia that's published that is well worth the money, though I don't know if I would buy it every year - maybe every five or ten years, depending on how interested I am...I think if Per & co. are interested in a similar idea w/ the wealth of info they have on Prince's career, they should try working with a fairly successful small indie press, and attempt a publication where they don't have to skimp with the images and print in an eensy-weensy point size in order to save $$$ on the number of pages printed. Prince's past work deserves a better layout, and everyone who worked so hard at Uptown deserves something better to brag on, too.

Per is a really nice guy and I wish him the best. I've worked with him in the past and he was really enthusiastic and welcoming as a fan and an editor. I'd love it if he got more muscle behind his project and could kick out a shined-up product with better production values. I think he's sitting on a goldmine of information - nothing out-of-this-world, but it's in demand and known to fans all over the place - and I think it could be wrapped up in a prettier package than what we're used to.

I loved me some Uptown but the last year or so showed it's decline in full effect, was barely treading water at the end.

I agree Anxiety if they continue into forthcoming years the "The Vault" yearbook may be worth checking every now and then.

I still remember in the spring of 1994 when I bought my first issue of Uptown.I got it at Tower Records and I became hooked. There was SO MUCH information, news, interviews, etc.I thought it was the best fanzine ever.I've contributed to a few of their articles and I've always found the staff to be really nice people, very intelligent too.
