The Time: Why not just Prince?... I've read that Prince created the Time so it would be an outlet for some of his funkier, R&B stuff and that it would allow him to be known as an artist whose work wouldn't be pigeonholed as simply R&B.
The thing is, to me at least, Prince allowed Morris Day/JJ/JB/MM/TL and those cats to get the glory for some of his really fabulous stuff. I mean he gave the Time some glorious nasty funk. Funk too stinky. The Time did well with what he gave them, but why wouldn't P just put out all the Time stuff on different albums as Prince? Many people don't know that most of the Time's music is written by P. Was P's giving of the music to others selfless, or was he trying to be selfish by using others so his work couldn't be catagorized strictly as R&B funk?

IMHO...this was Prince's way of getting out all of his material at one time, when he didn't have any other outlet to do it in. Like, what the NPGMC is supposed to be about now. But I'm glad he did, the Time rocks!!! [This message was edited Mon Dec 15 9:46:56 PST 2003 by MRSSOAP99]

When the Time first came out they were labeled Prince's Band. Because of the success of Dirty Mind the time was Accepted, they rode in on the coat tale of Prince. They were and are great musicians who Prince helped while he helped himself. They wanted a mass audience and Prince wanted the world. They both attained what they wanted by doing it that way. I think that what ever you do for others is selfless and selfish at the same time. Because recognition is in itself a reward. True Prince wrote most of the tunes on the albums, and because of it we got a great powerful live show. And music that otherwise, we probably would not have gotten. Why not Prince? because some races of people will not accept others that are not of their race, The black community would have a hard time excepting a black man doing rock music, and the white community would not accept a black man doing Funk music. It wasn't a fault of his but a fault of our society. so he gave the two communities what they would accept. The Time & a multi-racial rock group. Our defect, not his How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

Maybe they were great live.
But the albums, at least the first ones, were a solo work by Prince. Morris just karaoking over the original Prince voice track.

Also, it's interesting that it has been said that P was often jealous of the Time and in some instances believed the group was upstaging him. Funny, since he wrote the tracks. All that noise probably inspired him to write some truly dastardly good stuff, though.

It was an entirely different time back in the early 80's and radio/music companies wouldn't go 4 that much music from one artist. There was also such a difference in musical styles that I think Warner Brothers didn't want to "confuse" the listening public...Times have changes a bit but there still butt backwards when it comes to what listeners can handle...

Digital electric & Wish... u two are absolutely right. Certain genres of music will allow an artist to put out 2 albums a year(i.e. jazz). I think the Time was accepted more by the black community b/c they looked like the other groups during that era, whereas prince..hmm(I could understand Prince being upset). BUT the radio stations often credited prince with Vanity6, the Time, alexander nevermind, etc.
Wish... have fun at the concert!!
