Prince sounds good in more produced albums and in "almost live" albums too.
It's about phases.

I believe some people think so because it's what they are supposed to believe.
So you're not cool if you like overproduced music or if you wear white socks... It's all a learnt attitude

You can either hear a good tune or you can't. I can agree that most of 'Emanicpation' is crap. But it certainly isn't because of the production. Most of it is because the songs, with the exception of Disc 2, are most weak. Especially in comparison with what we know him to be capable of.

I think NPS is crappier than Emancipation. NPS is the crappiest. C&D is a bit better, some good songs, but all in all ... well... crappy. the Vault, also basically 3 or 4 good songs and the rest...mmwwwaaa... Crystall ball tunes from the nineties... not satisfying... High... almost, but not quite. Controversy, Batman and D&P are not my favourites, but I like them better than the dark years - 96-00.

Those comprise about half the LP.

Emancipation is not great nor is it crap. I would rank it in the middle of the pack when it comes to Prince albums. Problem is, people tend lump his average work in with the real crap like Now, Jughead, Baby Knows, etc. Nothing wrong with the Emancipation album as a whole. It has some of my favorite Prince tracks ever (Bed I Scream, My Computer, Dreamin About U) I'd take another album even this good from him in a heart beat.

Look, you've ALL got it wrong.

Emancipation is mostly crap because of BOTH production AND weak songs.

It's not one or the other, it's both!

* bad songs

However, I agree that there are maybe 10 good songs. I'd take it as far down as 8 though.

And to anyone who mentioned The Vault in the list of other crappy albums, suck my muthaf---n d--k! Leave it alone, it's a great album.

P.S. Apart from only TWO tracks, Chaos rocks, too!

And yes, Handclaps, your precious Controversy can stay OUT of the crap list, too.
