Small Club

For years i've had to endure Orgers going on about 'Small Club'. I sat and read every post, pure envy seeping from my pores.

Finally the day comes. I get my hands on a copy.

Oh my god! This is good. This is really fu8kin good.

I should state at this point i haven't taken the time to listen to the whole performance yet. Haven't had the opportunity to truly digest it.

What i did when i got it was straight away put it onto 'Just My Imagination'.
Its been on repeat ever since...

This is absolutely mindblowing. The guitar in it is some of the most inspired playing i've ever heard.

Usually the long indulgent solos can bore me, but this is, well.. something different.

As i speak 'Still Would Stand All Time' has come on. This is Prince at his most electric. It's like he's possesed.

I don't care what your view on bootlegs is, it is your obligation as a Prince fan to have this.

I just wish this was officially available Nobody that sat down and seriously listened to it could deny that Prince is one of the greats.

Perhaps i'm getting alittle too excited. I'll go and sit down and give this a proper listen to.

I remember the feeling of getting my first live recording, in my case Camden Palace.

Remeber being blown away.

Small Club is a great perfomance, it seems to have more songs than he plays these days, which are often just jams.

Here he took the time to play GREAT songs, and also loads of then unknown songs.

Ask ABIERMAN what it sounded like for real, btw. I haven't gotten around asking yet.

It's defintly one of his (and his band) best performances and a crying shame that it has never been properly legally released. All the non-Prince fans I let this listen to were blown away by it, creating much more respect for the man than they used to have. It's an even bigger shame Prince doesn't see that, let alone that he wants to be associated with this brilliant performance anymore... sad

Well this isn't strictly my first. I've got a couple, namely 'Celebration 2002' and 'The Bataclam Show' taken during the same year.
I love both for different reasons.

The Bataclan Show in particular is brilliant, but there's something really raw about 'Small Club' that really gets me.

When you say he doesn't want to be associated with this brilliance, what do you mean exactly? Just that he has never openly endoresed bootlegs, or that he never released it, or something else?

Well, i suppose he in his mid forties now. Things change, people change. He can still turn it on though (see Bataclan).

This is the best European Club peformace bootleg ever!
I wonder if he's pleased with it..
I once heard an interview with the director, who was in charge of filming the Live Show that eve in Rotterdam, and he stated that Prince was very much in charge of everything, and that he is very very difficult to work with, but that he would put anything aside to work with Prince again in the near future. He said he was also asked by Prince to film the aftershow that night. SO it excist on film somewhere in his vault. He said, he never heard anything like this intimate concert before...

It was fucking awesome. I had been to the regular show (LoveSexy, '88) the night before and me and a friend of mine were just having some drinks at 't Paard in The Hague (a city where I hardly ever come, being from Amsterdam!). Then late at night there was this vibe going on, nobody could tell exactly what was going to happen, but it was in the air that something was about to happen. Than all of a sudden these musicians show up on stage...Prince's band. I remember telling my friend (at that time, not a P-fan...yet!): 'Fuck, that's Sheila E.!' The band started jamming, you know how it went, only being there made it extra special, almost spiritual. It was absolutely mindblowing!
Actually, the boot is very good quality, enjoy it while you can!

Like his guitar work? There are some great rehearsals from the Purple Rain era that will blow your mind...neon rendevous...then thers the undertaker...the controversy tours had some good guitar too...

yeah...that small club version of Just My Imagination & Still Would Stand All Time...whew...its hard to top that...

If this was filmed and is sitting in The Vault somewhere collecting dust...what a shame...

and to the poster who was ACTUALLY THERE at the live show...how does it feel to have been a part of history? not just Prince history but music history in general? This show is definitely going to be remembered as a true classic in musical historical terms.

Well he isn't loosing money on something he has never released like a live show. And -IF- he ever decides to release this ( and is not edited like hell), 99% of fans will still buy it.

Again, if it wasn't for bootleged live shows, I would not be a Prince fan today.

I am not upset and Prince shouldn't be either. It's not just his work, but also from the band. HE is the one who fails to release it, he isn't losing any money it. then he shouldn't bitch either. Or is he mad his fans enjoy his live performances? Fans even become bigger fans because of these bootlegs, making prince more money. If it's stealing just to listen to music he himself fails to release then i don't know what your perception of stealing is, but you are quite wrong or very egoistical, like Prince perhabs.
