This may take a while, but let's give it a go. My genious is at work.

Did Prince do Drugs

I've always wondered this, and been assured that Prince has never done any drugs, except possibly weed as a youngster.
But, I reckon Prince did have a semi-drug taking problem/habit earlier on in his life, and this is why:

• Firstly, in Lovesexy, the first track, Eye No, has the long intro, and at the end, Prince says "...the reason my voice is so clear is there's no smack, in my brain." - Maybe this means that Prince had taken Heroine prior to recording this song, and didn't like it.
  
  
• The Black Album was suddenly withdrawn and shelved days before its release, and many close friends/band members who knew Prince at the time, said he withdrew this after a bad experience with E(cstacy), which formed his notion of a good and bad side of himself, the bad being "Spooky Electric".
  
  
• I've heard this mentioned here before - but after Prince's child's death, Prince almost died after an overdose of sleeping pills with wine (bad idea - imagine no Prince today), this also led to the title of the song "My Little Pill."
  
  

These were the first, and key things which flew into my mind, but I know there are other hints.

I think, almost certainly, that Prince tried many drugs during his fame, but within the last 3 years or so, Prince has reformed, and perhaps this explains the hidden message in the Rainbow Children (Discovered by IstenSzek and butterfli25). The playing time of TRC is 69:52 and Psalm 69, line 52 reads:

"...in your great love oh God answer me with your sure salvation... "

Prince is perhaps repenting and begging for mercy and salvation from God for the wrongs he's done.

i find it interesting that he is really conservative and nearly always refused to take part in any drugs as a youngster

I'm fairly certain Prince wrote "My Little Pill" well before the alleged sleeping pills/wine incident. That song was one of the "I'll Do Anything" tracks, and those were recorded in the early '90s.

Several ex-band members and girlfriends have confirmed that Prince has experimented with drugs, but I don't think he's ever been addicted to anything for long.

Of course he's done drugs! No musician of his calibre or long-standing hasn't. If you really think he hasn't at least done soft drugs, all i'll say is you're very likely kidding yourselves.

I'd say looking at how many songs (and what they sound like!) he recorded in 86-87, he was probably on speed!

prince is too much of a controller to let himslef become addicted. maybe he's tried things, but never been a regular user, methinks.

This can't be true... this song was written in or around 1993/1994. The baby came along in 1996.

While I don't dispute the possibility of drug use in some of Prince's career, the points you've made are only speculative:

1) the no smack remark sounds a little cynical and directed from a position of moral superiority, and not from a recovered addict.

2) Prince is highly inspired. You could expect such a driven and artistic person to suffer from depression and long term states of mind from time to time. I'm sure a few of us get depressed without any associated drug addiction.

3) Sleeping pills and wine, even if it's true doesn't mean a thing. He loved that child and if he took it badly then so be it. Once again, I'm sure a few of us have had major problems and perhaps done stupid things.

Someone with the work ethic and of Prince is obviously not a partaker of drugs on a regular basis.
