There's one point people seem to forget too. Andre brings the hip-hop flavor Prince tried (unsuccessfully) to incorporate into the mix. In that, Andre is a unique artist and is the prototype for the next best thing (pun intended).

That isn't strictly true, otherwise the album wouldn't be segregated into two completely different sounding discs.

true...i honestly don't see why folks are ravin about him so much here. shrug he's cool, sure, but damn...

i think maybe because andre is what prince was in his zenith. its like a nostalgia thang. prince got all watered down and kinda left some of us missing that edge. also, for newbie fans, andre's shit is the first time they are experiencing that style in their life. ain't nobody else doin' it, ya know? i love the love below cd. its fun and raunchy and raw...nothing so polished about it at all. just like p's earlier days.

I think that pretty much sums it up.Many of Prince's fans simply miss the days when he released fun, edgy, raunchy music. They don't want N.E.W.S.,they're starving for something like "Hey Ya" or "She Lives In My Lap".

True true, but as I said before in another thread, he ShOULD be doing this stuff and we know he can do it better, but instead we're getting NEWS and Family Feast...

I was listening to Irrisistable Bitch yesterday, and this song is so funky it's ridiclous..

I am going to be so bold as to say ..no...no he shouldn't..

and we know he can do it better, but instead we're getting NEWS and Family Feast...

Yes we all know he can do it better but why are u focusing on one jam and one release...the majority of his body of work since his so called greatest era has been great as well. It is only because of th e internet and the bootlegs etc that we come to know some other performances...and we now juxtapose them with everything he does..if we had no knowledge, and only had the released releases to judge from with no internet to cause a ruckus, folks would be singing a different tune.

I was listening to Irrisistable Bitch yesterday, and this song is so funky it's ridiclous..

so he has to keep on making Irresistable Bitches? come on now

I like Andre 3000. the Lovebelow is an excellent cd. Charisma is important in the business and Andre has it! Prince is a recluse, no one wants to pay $15 for a cd and never get to see the performer (unless they are dead). The other key point is Princes' music isn't fun anymore. Yes, he is apporoaching middle age, but that doesn't mean the music can't be fun. Shit, I want to "Play in the Sunshine" again!

No offense but all of that doesnt add up to a hill of beans in what I said..I never said "Prince is doing this kind of music now and better than ANDRE "..I SAID what Andre is doing what Prince HAS DONE ..HE DID IT BETTER..DID IT EFFORTLESSLY and that what

But the problem with your quote, is that you're still WRONG. Prince has never done this type of music before. When people are saying that Dre is 'doing Prince better than Prince', it's not that the music sounds like Prince. It's that it blows all expectations and conceptions of what people have of an artist or the music itself. The Love Below is the best album of 2003 because of its willingness to not just break rules, but disregard the rulebook completely about what an artist can do on an album.

I played TLB last night for my wife while cleaning, and she said afterward, 'good music picks'. She thought I had put in several cds, and was surprised to discover it was all the same artist. But the genius of TLB isn't in mastering a whole bunch of styles - Ryan Adams does that with little effect - it's in synthesizing the styles into something new. Like playing "My Favorite Things" in a jazz-mixed-with-drum-&-bass flava. Like not having a description for "Hey Ya" except for it's cool.

Prince used to be the king of mixing genres. Now he seems more content with taking one genre and sticking to it. I personally believe it started with "Blue Light," a reggae song that tries to be nothing other than a reggae song.

There are those who think that Prince could do in his sleep the things that Andre is doing today. If that's the case, I wish Prince would take a nap.

No I am not...but u are which I will prove with once again right below

Prince has never done this type of music before.

rolleyes please...that She Lives In Myv Lap is a mixture of Camille and Neon Telephoone coda type music Prince did 15 years ago...Hey Ya is just Lets Go Crazy done cheaply (in a cramped studio)

Prototype is JIR ehteral type of laid back music just without the fireceness

Love Hater etc is just Do U Lie style etc...I could go on but I wont ...Prince has done this...yall cream over it...he did it better...he did it effortlessly without having to claim "Im gon thru thangs so wont be touring or makig a true collab effort with my partner " etc etc...

I bet When people are saying that Dre is 'doing Prince better than Prince', it's not that the music sounds like Prince. It's that it blows all expectations and conceptions of what people have of an artist or the music itself.

Yeah..for the initiated or this new generation of course it does...that aint change what I said...just because the new, unititated, or you wife cleaning to it doesnt mean Prince aint done all this befofe, better, and effortlessly.

The Love Below is the best album of 2003 because of its willingness to not just break rules, but disregard the rulebook completely about what an artist can do on an album.

I might have agreed with that before the song "Millionaire" off Kelis’ album. That song is his strongest yet production and content wise. He’s definitely growing and I would watch this cat carefully over the next couple of years.

Okay, thanks for proving nothing to me except an ability to not let go of the past. All you care about is what Prince used to do, not what he is doing. Maybe you should quit praising Prince for things he seems incapable of doing anymore, namely making exciting music. Let's tally - N.E.W.S. - most irrelevant album of 2003. TLB/Speakerboxx - Best album of 2003. I don't care that Prince could have done better, because he didn't. Andre is the new shizzle, so deal with it. I hope you enjoy living in 1985.

Here's my take on the whole OutKast/"Dre is the new Prince" deal...

As much as I like 'em, I think the critical praise heaped upon OutKast is all too indicative of what lowered expectations we have for music nowadays. I mean, everything they've done that's got people calling 'em "eclectic" and whatnot... take it out of a rap context, and tell me what's so special about it?? What, these guys have incorporated some... *whoa*... electric guitar squeals here and there???... they've... *by George*... featured REAL LIVE HONEST-TO-MOSES INSTRUMENTATION on their songs??... Dre's half of the "Speakerboxxx/Love Below" set actually has him... *gosh*... SINGING and WRITING POP MELODIES???...

Well, that's all very eclectic and "daring" and "unconventional" and whoop-de-doo for HIP-HOP... but, sorry, EVERYONE ELSE has been doing that crap for decades... and this automatically qualifies Dre for "next Prince" status???

Org'ers, I'm bout ta spew purple electric all over my damn keyboard here...

And not singing very well either. Ballads expose your chops, or lack thereof.

I hear what you're saying, and I dig the album, but it's definitely not without some obvious flaws. And since a lot of it is Dre's interpretation of Prince's old sonic territory, it's obviously not new - which doesn't make it bad. But at the same time, Prince's interpretation of Fusion on his most recent release is supposedly ragged on for not being new either. People contradict themselves. They want more POP. Dre is giving them that.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

i wonder what Prince makes of Andre.

I have read with great interest all your comments on Dre and you know what I bet Prince is truly "digging" Dre's "thang" and is probably flattered as hell to have inspired him so. I mean who wouldn't be! Outkast are the "shit"! There is just as much of Prince's flava on "ATliens" as there is on "The Love Below". WE ALL INSPIRE EACH OTHER, thats life!

all I said was that prince did it, and could do it if he choose to, and that he did it better..calm down. Nobody is living in 1985. You're the one who is deriding NEWS etc..you are the one who wants him to do like he did before. And I never said Love Below was no good, in fact I said its a great cd.
