I think it's the charisma. Sure, there are plenty more-talented folks, but can you help lubbing him? Well, I guess RD can. I can't. The Normal Whores Club

I agree with you on this rd. I think people just get a little overzealous and excited to hear a style played again that Prince has been very notable for in the past. Therefore, they say that it's something he should be playing, which is total bs. He has and can easily do it again and again, just chooses not to. I am MrVictor....

I love what Andre is doing The Love Below is real nice but I don't go as far as to say "Prince should've made this album"like some people are saying and he's not doing Prince better than Prince because can't nobody do Prince better than Prince.Andre just started singing and playing instruments back off the Stankonia album. It's silly for anyone to say he's doing Prince better than Prince when Prince was out there killing it when Andre was in kindergarten. [This message was edited Fri Dec 12 10:34:54 PST 2003 by SexxyCool] --- We're starving for a Prince 1985 - 1988 era album...so every new guy to come along with a promising start is labeled the new Prince. This has been happening since Romeo Blue was on the verge of releasing his first album back in 1989, as Lenny Kravitz of course. Someone has got to fill the Prince void... but no one is deep enough! We love him so much because he is a true one of a kind.

The doing Prince better than Prince phrase has come up a whole lot for almost a decade now about anybody who shows the slightest Prince influence. Especially when some people talk about D'Angelo. People want Prince to go back to what he used to do in POP MUSIC because of the nostalgia aspect - it takes them back to where they were as teens and young adults. It's like they want Prince to be stuck at the 25-30 age range forever. Prince has covered that ground already. If he would constantly repeat himself the same people would be complaining about THAT, so they'll be disgruntled regardless. And with some of those lyrics that Andre writes/sings I sure as hell hope Prince wouldn't regress (see the completely obnoxious "Roses" from TLB). Prince has had his own problems with "Jughead" nonsense.
Having said all that; I still like TLB, but the b-sides analogy is a good one for many of the songs on it. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

RD! The operative word is would... Its what Prince would have done - not what Prince is doing... Does everybody remember the New Coke / Classic Coke fiasco in the mid-80s? People got so pissed off with New Coke that they turned to Pepsi instead!

i think maybe because andre is what prince was in his zenith. its like a nostalgia thang. prince got all watered down and kinda left some of us missing that edge. also, for newbie fans, andre's shit is the first time they are experiencing that style in their life. ain't nobody else doin' it, ya know? i love the love below cd. its fun and raunchy and raw...nothing so polished about it at all. just like p's earlier days.

Can't speak for "people" but for me, that is wrong, wrong, thrice wrong. I would prefer to see Prince make great music again, not meaning that I would like it if he 'sounded' like he did then, just have fire in his belly - TRC had that, great stuff. Emancipation - Rave/High - Dire bollocks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I like Andre 3000. the Lovebelow is an excellent cd. Charisma is important in the business and Andre has it! Prince is a recluse, no one wants to pay $15 for a cd and never get to see the performer (unless they are dead). The other key point is Princes' music isn't fun anymore. Yes, he is apporoaching middle age, but that doesn't mean the music can't be fun. Shit, I want to "Play in the Sunshine" again!

No offense but all of that doesnt add up to a hill of beans in what I said..I never said "Prince is doing this kind of music now and better than ANDRE "..I SAID what Andre is doing what Prince HAS DONE ..HE DID IT BETTER..DID IT EFFORTLESSLY and that what "Climb in my fur."

Actually the b-sides weren't throwaways, believe it or not they meant more to him, that's why they were "singled" out.
As far as the Dre' 3000 is the new Prince, Well yeah. He's just has that experimental/dark/sexual funk vibe going on, something which Prince "Was" a master at. More power to Prince for not pigeonholing his style into that format, but for those who love his old vibe 'Dre has resurrected it. Andre openly admits being a fan of his and a fan of many of P's idols. Even though it may not be intentional that sometimes one of dre's tracks may reak of purple funk but the paralells can't be denied.

I agree.
Andre is cool, and a breath of fresh air for today's popular music, but he isn't as great as he is made out to be. I STILL don't think he coppies(or at least sets out to coppy) Prince, but Prince could easily do what he does in his sleep. ~KiKi

Andre brings the hip-hop flavor Prince tried (unsuccessfully) to incorporate into the mix. In that, Andre is a unique artist and is the prototype for the next best thing (pun intended).

Musically on the other hand, songs like "Vibrate" "Pink N' Blue" "Prototype" "She lives in my lap" sets a mood that's not to far fetched to call "dark". Im jus sayin Prince could do what he does in easy steps--in a week prolly lol you give the prince of today too much credit if you ask me. prince was the man in the 80's; that's when he had his peak. he can still make good music, but nothing like in the old days. 'the rainbow children' is a hot album, but it's one of the few, perhaps the only album of the last 5 to 10 years that i really dug all the way through. why do you think people keep saying "this is the album prince should have made" in reviews of albums by people like d'angelo, meshell and now dre? although i think it's a bullshit line, i do think it's a sign of the times. 80's prince is dead. and the prince of today can not recapture the genius of 80's prince, even if he wanted to. but that's just an opinion.. i think 'the love below' is a good album. it has its flaws here and there, but overall it's good. you definitely here prince's influence, but it's not as primary as you people make it out to be. don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain i'm high, so high
