why do i never feel like listening to emancipation?

the only prince album that i never feel like listening to is emancipation. i dont know what it is about the album, i mean the songs are mostly ok, some are sub standard but on the whole it's not a bad collection of songs. maybe its just too damn big. maybe it's the sleek production on the album the puts me off. i just don't know.

I think..in a nutshell

because it is done with waaay to much Key Board & then live Vocal & Guitar Tracks.

He used keyboards for everything and just pasted & looped it everywhere. (more then usual)

Good question (its cold sound and weak arrangements may have something to do with it...) In any case, these 3 CDs won't do any good to your gastric pains.

Just burn a good single album out of it.There's a shitload of filler on it otherwise.

The album is dull, musically and lyrically conservative; it follows trends instead of setting them. Prince sounds like a follower rather than a leader and churns out an album that is designed to appeal to all but ended up pleasing few.

Another problem is,the album is simply too long. When I play a CD,I like to hear the entire disc. But with 'Emancipation',I can never do this.I rarely have three hours to sit and listen to an album. So,when I do play 'Emancipation',I find myself skipping through many of the songs, mostly the less-than-fantastic songs.

I still think it would have been a kickass 2-CD set.Remove the weaker songs like "We Gets Up","La Da Da",the title track, the four remakes, and a few others, and it would have been just perfect.Plus,2 filler-free CDs is easier to digest than a sprawling 3-CD set.

Come on. Eman is not that bad compared to some other "gems" of the 90'ies.
Do you really feel like listening to Come, New Power Soul, Rave ... ?

In particularly Eman disc 2 is very special if you're in the right mood. You may disagree but to me it contains some of the best + deepest love songs he has ever done.

disc 2 is good, most of it, but disc 1 and 3 are outdated, mostly.

strange huh. wink they are certainly not the greatest things around, but Slave is superb to me!! biggrin it's strange, hunting, funky, non-melodic, and it's surprising. Listen to it with Headphones, and get lost in it's rythmic melody, which is só strange and unheard of...

I wonder if setting a trend is necessarily something good.

Does everyone but me listen to all 3 discs back to back regularly then.I love 90% of Emancipation, but I've NEVER listened to all 3 discs in one go , I take it as 3 seperate discs ,the first full of a mix of party tracks and some deeper stuff, the 2nd pretty much an album of luurve, the 3rd is the best, full of allsorts of cool experiments and shit.

All of the above... nearly.

In short, the songs themselves (and arrangements) are scattered... mostly weak songs, with brilliant songs lost in the mix (i.e. "The Love We Make")

The engineering just SUCKS... "H.M. Buff" aka Hans Buff is a kid from Minneapolis, who mixes everything super dry and lifeless. Sounds like the whole album nearly was recorded direct and all digital...

Very Cold indeed.

Notice how the sound of Rainbow Children is nearly the opposite... fat and warm.

Yep. I'd rather listen to Newpower Soul. However, Emancipation also isn't the worst album he's ever made.

I agree Spookymuffin. The Love we Make is one of the best songs on Emancipation. I could listen to it over and over again, which I have been doing for the past month.

I like CD 2 and occasionally listen to the "house music" songs on CD 3.

But then again, my Prince cd's arent getting that much rotation anymore. Perhaps I'm getting old, but I'm just not listening to music that much anymore.

Then again, I'm NOT old...maybe I'm just not obsessed like I used to be.
