I made a thorough review of this album this weekend - all three albums - all 36 songs...

...I came to the conclusion that it's one of the most flaccid, lifeless, weak album in his career.

Only MAYBE 10 songs are OK (In This Bed I Scream, Face Down). The rest range from horrible to very mediocre.

AND THE PRODUCTION IS HOOORRRIBBLLEEE!!! He did not spend enough time on the songs. Too much weak drum machines. Too much input from Kirk.

The Mix suck too!!!

I ain't got too much of a problem with the songs themselves...
it's just the over-production on the album.

LOL, well 10 songs is about 1 album, so we did OK.

I do agree though, I think the biggest things to let it down are:

1) The plastic, lifeless production (major, major problem of Prince's work 1996-1999)
2) Too long (Nowhere near enough strong material for a 3CD set)
3) The languid 2nd CD (some strong cuts on here, but it real feels like a chore listening to it)

See, I think everything from Diamonds & Pearls thru to Chaos & Disorder was far more over-produced than Emancipation.

I disagree. I think he spent too much time on the songs. Making them so polished that it removed the raw soul that they needed.

Maybe The Gold Experience is slightly over-produced... but I personally don't think Prince has made a weaker album, in terms of production, than Emancipation.

Emancipation showed me the course he was going to take after WB and I didn't like the way it looked. If this was the direction that WB didn't want him to go (at least production wise), I wish he'd have stayed at WB.

I dig the individual songs, not the package of product. So many songs for a great price ($9 now in cut out) It seems like a bootleg or a NPGMC cd. If he would have sent these out to npg club members as a boycott to the slave/contract dispute, we would have thought it kicked ass.
