ABOUT "PURPLE RAIN"... I watched PURPLE RAIN the other night on cable & I have this question thats been on my mind since, as my daughter was the one who brought it up...If wendy & Lisa wrote "purple rain" (in the movie), why was princes dad playing the music on his piano? P then dedicated it 2 his dad in his concert at the end. Question? Who wrote the Music & the lyrics in the movie & how do wendy, lisa & his dad collaborate/connect with the song? Anyone??? May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.   | |

One question I have is was it Wendy and Lisa that actually wrote the song or was that just part of the story...I think he mixed Wendy and Lisa's version of a tune mixed with that of the piano playing father and came up with the final song.

In the film:
The Kid finds his father playing a song, the melody of which is incorporated by the band in their arrangement of a song they perform, 'Computer Blue.' Separately, a second tune is recorded by the girl band members who give the tape for The Kid to listen to. As the film progresses, he begins to listen to the song and play it on the piano, finally playing it with the group towards the end of the film, by which time it appears he has written some lyrics to the girls' tune, and it is revealed as 'Purple Rain.' Back in the real world: The song, 'Father's Song', (which The Kid's father plays in the film) is credited solely to John L Nelson. The song, 'Computer Blue', is credited to Prince, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and John L Nelson. The latter credit to John L Nelso probably reflects the inclusion of the melody from 'Father's Song.'
