grafitti bridge was suppose to be a Wizard of Oz type movie, using their art to get out of the ghetto over the bridge to "oz" but warner wanted a purple rain 2 so characters had to be renamed, story changed, and old characters added.

anyone seen the original grafitti bridge concept in Studio B? smile

Becuase Prince tried to do everything himself, and, contrary to (what seems to be) popular belief, he cannot do everything himself. hmph!

[color=purple:924f1f3292:23c15a5e33] The sequel being that somehow Morris topped the kid and owned the club & ppl STILL dissed P's music. (until the END, AGAIN) Most of the music was conducted at paisley park & the name of the original niteclub in purple rain must have changed. 7 corners was connected 2 aura's poetry somehow, probably the "area" where they "hung" out? I loved melody cool's song, & doing a few numbers on the Minneapolis streets gave it a bit of variety. Aura took on P as his guardian angel & gave him confidence 2 keep going towards his goals, although she knew of HER impending death. Her death/love obviously took P 2 a higher level in the end 2 where he bcame more religious & ready 2 love his competition which was morris. This is my opinion. BTW, I loved all the music in this film. Tick Tick Bang & Still would stand all time especially. cool

I've never seen it either. I don't even remember it coming out and I really liked Prince then. From all the comments I've read on here over the years, it would be hard to be objective.

Prince was on tour at the time, and did a lot of editing from his hotel rooms. He was sent (Fed Ex) video tapes of scenes that were shot, and that made his poor judgement come out A LOT!! The original first rough draft wasn't even close to the finished movie. It went in front of WB big wigs at least 5 times before they saw some glimmer of hope.

There are a good number of deleted scenes that some traders have. Some really good stuff, and some serious crap. Prince becomes very bored very quickly with projects. He was very busy at the time of making this...thus it shows in the end... It lasted only 2 weeks in most states.

Graffiti Bridge was the first time I saw uncertainty and insecurity in Prince's eyes.
The Lovesexy tour exorcised his demon. His mind was clear. He lost his roll. The Holy wind kissed and caressed his intense flame to an extent that it almost blew out his uniqueness and hunger entirely.
He was certainly in a dark place during the late 90s, a time which he referred to in later Gold-era interviews as the period where "I thought I was truly losing my mind."
Deciding he wanted to be a pop star, Prince Rogers Nelson then intentionally, cyncially and surgically extracted the weirdness and wonderfulness from his music.
The operation was success.
Fortunately, the real Prince woke up on the operating table three years ago. Experts say he will make a full recovery.

Nice. I very much agree with what you've written, especially the part about cynically and surgically removing the weirdness...that is exactly correct. I remember clearly thinking around 1987 or so that what I loved most about prince was how beautifully bizarre his music was. For me, the decade starting with Diamonds and Pearls was all about his attempt to make "normal" music, culminating in the opus of ordinary that was Emancipation. I rejoiced at Rainbow Children, not because it was a masterpiece or even one of the greatest things he's ever done, but because he was embracing his weird essence.

You're dead on.

I think for as simple as the movie was (they never left the sound stage - AT ALL) it was pretty good. I liked Tick-Bang. If it had been done any other way it wouldn't have been his movie. ALot of it is corny but for a fan HEH it works.

Still in my heavy rotations on VHS.
