Why was Grafitti Bridge so HORRIBLE?

I mean, a SEQUEL to Purple Rain???

Where did this 7 Corners shit come from?

What happened to 1st Avenue?

Why did Minneapolis turn into a sound stage?

Why was Melody Cool allowed to exist (god I hate that song)?

It's been so long since I saw it, I can't remember what it's about, lol...

I just remember hating it.

The Doctor makes valid points. I can only watch this with a blunt then it's pretty fucking amazing, except fr tick tick bang's performance. The worst thing ever.

The performance scenes in the movie are pretty good.
'Elephants & Flowers' was cool and I even quite liked 'Tick,Tick,Bang' boxed.

it was horrible because he wrote and directed it himself. had he let someone who knew what they were doing edit or re-write it, and let someone who knew what they were doing direct it, it might have been good.

I think for as simple as the movie was (they never left the sound stage - AT ALL) it was pretty good. I liked Tick-Bang. If it had been done any other way it wouldn't have been his movie. ALot of it is corny but for a fan HEH it works.

Still in my heavy rotations on VHS.

To be honest, I think Graffiti Bridge is a testament to making art whilst the idea is still fresh.

We all know how Prince has always been very centered on what he working on/doing in the now. Seems like he must have *really* had faith in whatever he was trying to say and explore with Graffiti Bridge to keep it on the back-burner for so long.

You've all read the original script right? If not, I'm sure someone will provide a link.

It was a pretty wacky script, but it didn't have anything to do with Purple Rain, the whole sequel thing was tacked on in order to get it made.

Probably because of the horrendous bomb that was Under The Cherry Moon.

the story certainly had potential. the half-baked script, the mawkish direction, the shoddy soundstage locations, and the sub-amateur acting kinda killed it though

Well, I thought the title track on the album was so bad that it made the movie look like Gone with the Wind...

I always thought the movie just suffered badly from a low, low budget. If you want to see how a musical should be produced on film, just glance at Moulin Rouge.

It was like a group of friends getting together and making a home movie. No discernable plot, hammy acting, with a few decent tunes thrown in for good measure. The set resembled a stage musical and the costumes looked tatty. Prince as a painter and decorator just didn't wash with me, he painted that wall so many damn times! Ingrids poetry was toe curling ( although I did like her album.) Jill Jones looked like she couldn't be bothered and the idea of ANYONE living under a bridge and still looking as fresh as a daisy was laughable.

No one outside of Prince's hardcore fans would enjoy this monstrosity. And I'm a person who defends 'Under The Cherry Moon'. But there is no defense for 'Graffiti Bridge'. The album should have been enough.

"Tick, Tick, Bang was the worst "prince video" ever.

The other thing I couldn't stand was when George Clinton was doing "We Can Funk", and Prince's vox were right there in the mix, but P wasn't up there.

Basically, the movie is only worth seeing Prince at his Mac, and a few other scenes... I like the basic message... U can get what U want/need easier with a whisper than with a scream.

Nah, it was like the boss and a group of employees getting together. I doubt anyone but Prince even thought the plot of GB was vaguely interesting beyond getting themselves self-exposure. With the possible exception of Ingrid Chavez.

Worst movie-going, going, gone experience ever. I was with a bandmate and his best buddy. I could tell they wanted to get the hell out but if they had left, I would have been stranded. It didn't help that people were leaving several rows down.

No good memories about this film AT ALL.

And you know WB had to have known that it was shite. They were probably hoping to just cash in on the name. Fools.

I have learned to appreciate Grafitti bridge over the years. It's an acquired taste. When I saw it at the theater, I was like whofarted Now, it has it's moments.

Graffiti Bridge was the first time I saw uncertainty and insecurity in Prince's eyes.
The Lovesexy tour exorcised his demon. His mind was clear. He lost his roll. The Holy wind kissed and caressed his intense flame to an extent that it almost blew out his uniqueness and hunger entirely.
He was certainly in a dark place during the late 90s, a time which he referred to in later Gold-era interviews as the period where "I thought I was truly losing my mind."
Deciding he wanted to be a pop star, Prince Rogers Nelson then intentionally, cyncially and surgically extracted the weirdness and wonderfulness from his music.
The operation was success.
Fortunately, the real Prince woke up on the operating table three years ago. Experts say he will make a full recovery.
