Who Is "Cutie Pie"? Can anyone tell me who sings under the moniker "Cutie Pie" on the MPLS track on 1800 New Funk?
Also, for those at the org back in '98, there was a story of the group MPLS releasing a CD in Japan only. I think from memory it featured Michael B, Sonny T, Sheila E and some others. What happened with this? Do these recording sessions exist? Xperience the Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com/

Margie Cox?
There was a CD single and a 12" maybe, sold through 1800NF. I think MPLS developed from the Crayons, who were equally as short-lived, but performed on thThe Ryde Dyvyne TV special to promote
Please anyone with a better memory wanna add to this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please anyone with a better memory wanna add to this. I guess margie is a possibility, although her interview with Uptown doesn't mention it at all. 'The Crayons' line-upassembled for the televised performance of 1992's The Ryde Divine included Sonny, Morris Hayes and Margie associate, Billy Franze. Certainly, Minneapolis also included Sonny to perform his composition, 'MPLS', released on 1-800NEWFUNK in 1994, but I'm not sure performers on the 'MPLS' recording other than Sonny and have been positively identified / confirmed.

Sounds more like Jevetta Steele to me with her vox a little
bit altered [washed through some wires or something]. But I've also always wondered who it really is, strange to think there isn't any info on this track and it's singer 4 all these years since now. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I understood it was Jana Anderson who performed those vocals for the MPLS material and that it was really a Sonny T side project even though I'm certain Prince was involved. I'm sure you've seen her name as background vocalist on a few Paisley side projects.

The Steeles are definitely on the track too - notice the way it says "We're the S-T-E-E-L-E-S".
Of course, the next words sound like "James Brown", so what do I know?

Under her bio you can see the projects she worked on with Prince. Doesn't mention MPLS specifically but does mention the 1 800 NEW FUNK compilation. www.janaanderson.com Oh and listen to the samples from her lastest release - sure sounds like the same vocals... Yes, and I've just spotted that Uptown confirm in issue #48 that, having spoken with her, she did record on MPLS (one of the last things she did at Paisley Park) despite no credit on the CD release.
She does all lead and background female vocals on the track. Uptown report that she was always under the impression that she was just cutting a demo, and was unaware that her vocals had been retained for the track ultimately released. . Someone had a question that wanted answering, and the answer was provided after a bit if digging. The answer happened to be Jana Anderson. Jana Anderson's connection with Prince is detailed on the website links provided as well as in at least two issues of Uptown (#44 and #48). Reference to the one song title Prince is known to have written for an Anderson project (there are believed to be several songs involved in this fleeting 'project') is given in Turn It Up 2.0.
