The Black Album~I'm not sure about this one... I was listening to the black album the other day, And I really didn't like it. The only song i really liked was number one, Le Grind. All the three years i have been here at the org, Every post that i have read having to do with the black album gave it high praises. Sorry peeps, I have to say it... The Lovesexy Album is way better than the black album...I know that the album had When 2 are in love on it but even on the lovesexy album that wasn't one of my favorites. My favorites from the lovesexy album were:
Lovesexy Dance on I wish u heaven Alphabet street positivity No
and uh, That's really it
--- [i] Peace and Be Wild!!

So you're listening to The Black Album almost 15 years after it was created? I can see why U only really like one song. U had to hear it back when it was first created/cancelled...It was def. funky and held next to the Love Sexy album as an artist batteling his own internal demons showed the artistic genius that Prince was...15 years later down the road where Rap is now mainstream Cindy C. is a mom and Prince no longer makes public his internal struggles of religion/lust if he still haves them, it doesn't have the "freshness" that it did back in '88...I personaly prefer Lovesexy but The Black Album def. has a place in the chapters that make up Prince's life... | |

I ...but it isn't better than 'Lovesexy'. Oh and I agree with dansa to go and study 'the black album' - you'll find it's easily Prince's funkiest album of the 80's if not, ever. | |

I think The Black Album is VERY VERY close to Lovesexy. 2Nigs is such a dealy track. The only stinker on there is Bob George, and it aint dat bad. Lovesexy has Glam Slam to test our gag reflex. For me, these two albums are like a double album. A dark side and a light side. Kinda like Darth vs Obiwan. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. Would have been interesting to see how the two would have turned out as a double-album. ...could've even rivalled 'Sign 'O The Times'. | |

I actually like 'The Black Album' and there is some funky tracks on it. 'Bob George' is funny but also kinda strange too.'Le Grind' is a cool track and 'When 2 R In Love' is one of Prince's best ballads, it was the only song that made it to 'Lovesexy' aswell.
'Lovesexy' is an excellent album and 'The Black Album' cannot really compete against it. | |

Actually, I think The Black Album is a LOT better than Lovesexy. I agree with you there easily...it is a lot better than Lovesexy. I liked the Black Album the first time I heard it...and that was a crappy tape back in 1988. It just kicks ass from start to finish...no weak tracks in there...not a one. | |

For me there's never been any question at all that 'The Black Album' was better than 'Lovesexy'. I think from a lot of what I've read, at this site anyway, for a number of people the 'Lovesexy' experience was elevated by the message on the album.
It's always been music first for me. Not to say that I discard the lyrics, I certainly don't. But the lyrics are not going to move me if the music doesn't. For instance, my enjoyment of 'Lovesexy' was not anymore enhanced by the lyrics than my enjoyment of 'The Rainbow Children' was ruined by the religious heavy handedness of that album. Prince was on a mission with 'The Black Album' to prove that he was still funky. He suceeded wildly. | |

I only watched the 'Lovesexy Live' vids the other day and was really digging the 'black album' performances from the show. Not so sure about the freaky sunglasses he used to wear during 'Bob George' though. B-O-B, spell the shit backwards, what's it say? Same motherfuckin' shit... | |

Oh my, I remember that intro to Le Grind.
That beat. That voice. The horns. They rock on this album. Prince doing TWO songs from the album during the Lovesexy tour rocked my world. | |

Excellent post! It's right on the money. Actually, I disagree... I didn't buy the Black album until 2000, and it is still one of my all-time favorite albums by any artist. Besides library loans, I hadn't heard that album at all prior to when I purchased it. You can't say that you have to remember when the album was written. I hear this excuse for examining masterpieces all the time. The fact of the matter is, great music is timeless. It doesn't require us to remember context. Perhaps the messages within it will, but not the music itself. This is why I love Prince so much, because even though some of his sounds reak of a certain era, the entire sound of most of his songs remains fresh and brilliant to my ears. Oh, and Black Album is 1000 times better than Lovesexy, but that may just be because I'm a cynic, and so I like the darker stuff more. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Totally unrealistic I know, but if there's one album I'd like P to re record it would be the Black album. Get rid of all the electronics and record it with real instruments. That would be fucking awesome. All orgnotes and emails requesting trades or how to acquire bootleggage will be ignored. - The ThreadKiller - | |
