2 THOSE WHO DISSED N.E.W.S

Y'all remember in the beginning of the year when it seemed like this forum was filled up with a bunch of threads dissing N.E.W.S album when it was first released? Well I would like to think what all the nay sayer would say now, seeming as to how N.E.W.S is Grammy nominated ?

Prince Really Showed their Asses this time, Didn't he?
Man, this is the main reason why I love Prince so much, no matter how many times people bitch about his career, how many fans he looses, he still does his thing regardless and always utlimately win at the end, you just gotta respect the man 4 that. All I have to say is, it sure does feel good 2 have the last laugh, dont' ya think ?

Just because this is nominated for a Grammy doesn't mean it's good music, to those who dissed it before. I always thought it was just okay, and that hasn't changed just because of this nomination. It's still just okay, but music's value is predicated on a person's taste, as always. So, this is really isn't a "I told ya so". smile

Since when are the Grammys a measure of good music anymore? lol I haven't watched the Grammys since 1984. But I like N.E.W.S. though, so maybe I'll actually watch it this year.

Well done to Prince on his Grammy nomination.

As for my opinion of it now he has this nomination, well - It's the best cure for insomnia I know of.

As if crap never gets nominated at the Grammies...
Face it at least 90% of the stuff that gets nominated at some award show is crap...
The Grammies are pathetic just like the Oscars or other dumbass worthless award shows...
Kenny G. got a nomination too, I bet you think he makes amazing music eh?
I bet you think 50 cents is the best thing since sliced bread...
It's pretty pathetic that people count the grammies as some sort of measure of good music...

Right on Neversin... just the fact that Alicia Keys has quadruple the amount of Grammys for 1 album then Prince has in his whole career says it all. It's no wonder these shows are getting the worst ratings ever. I'm still happy N.E.W.S. was nominated. It's nice that he gets a mention. I wonder if the nomination has increased the sales of the CD. Anyway.. .I hope he comes on and plays the entire track 3. Wouldn't it be good if he just kept on playing right through the commercial? Ha ha~!

Well, if he was going up against some decent ppl in a better category, I would rethink my opinion on N.E.W.S. But POP Instrumental? Is that another word for AMBIENCE? Ohhh, did I say that? Just kidding smile Seriously though, he is going up against Kenny G...not much competition there. I would be impressed if he was going up against someone like Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland in a real Jazz category. Damn, I would shoot myself for thinking N.E.W.S was bad if that happened!!

NEWS is still relatively poor to me.Sorry. Tinpot Grammy nominations don't mean a damn thing, and certainly don't improve it.

He got this nomination purely because of the Hall of Fame induction and Purple Rains upcoming 20th anniversary.

I think N.E.W.S is Grrr-e-a-t. I was so moved by it that I joined the org. I thought the same of TRC but I also thought the next release would suck. It didn't and now I'm interested in P again.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

All valid points. I tend to agree with you mostly. One thing I find interesting though is that N.E.W.S. received many positive reviews.

Consider that people like Kenny G. (who i believe is THE #1 selling jazz musician (not that sales makes him the best) in the world. Like him or not, he has high visibility. I don't really care for him, but I hear he puts on a good show (only because his musicians are tip-top).

Prince on the other hand, is NOT in the spot light anymore, and most people have not even heard of his album or know that he still makes music. Its not like he is in the same position as most grammy nominees. So the fact that this album has even been nominated, it does at least show that people took the time to listen and many enjoyed it.

Universal could also be makin' the moves. Yeah, they have nothing to gain from this as an NPG release but if they ARE picking up his WB catalog, I'm sure they are doing everything they can to put his name way, way out there.

You're right. It just shows that if you follow your heart and work hard, good things will happen for you eventually. Whether or not the Grammies have any significance and despite the perceived lack of competition for the award it can only be a good thing. Winton Marsalis and his brand of music is no more deserving of awards than is Prince, or Kenny G for that matter.

I'm sure Universal or somebody pulled some strings, as they do for everybody that wins or is nominated. That doesn't take away from the honor because music always stands on its own merit. The honor is the chance to showcase the work.
