At the recent Basement Aftershow in Sydney; Renato was doing this killer solo on the keys, I said something like -"He is the man!", Prince replied "He's not the man." as he got on the keys. He then did his own solo for a little while giving us the impression that he's just as good. - -"If U don't like,

But I find Prince's piano playing pretty basic, whereas Renato makes his keyboard/piano talk!!!

All that to say: Sure, his bands usually comprise members who are more advanced on their instruments than he is, maybe not the entire band but a lot of the members. Some come to mind:
Blackwell Rhonda Renato Sheila E. Lisa and, last but not least: Tony M.

I'll give you Sheila and Blackwell, but Larry??? I think Prince is way better on bass, Larry just thumps and plays with fuzz. Let's see Larry try the bass solo that Prince plays during the video clip of him in the studio playing along to Partyman. School is in Mr Graham.

Every single one of his guitarists since Wendy is more advanced than he is. That said, he can definitely do his thing on guitar.
The whole "Prince is a bad-ass on every instrument" thing is such myth. He's a competent drummer, certainly enough for his own records, but Sheila, Bland, Blackwell? Forget it. He's a unique and idiosyncratic bassist -- "777-9311" is ridiculously awesome -- but Larry Graham is the shit (sorry, you haters). Mark Brown could cut and so could Sonny. And while Rhonda probably isn't the most fat-bottom, groovilicious bass player in the world, she could probably spank Prince in a fusion band. As a keyboardist? Hard to tell. He certainly gets around for basic parts and accompanying himself singing, but he's not much of a soloist beyond some stock blues-influenced passages. I've never heard anybody in any of his groups lay me out as a keyboard soloist, either, though obviously Lisa brought a sophisticated sense of harmony and texture to his music. But when guys like David Sancious and Jason Rebello and especially the late great Kenny Kirkland (a genius) are fucking burning in Sting's band, for example, you gotta wonder what all the hype about the NPG is about.

I haven't followed the NPG's playing enough to chime in with much intelligence here, but I've seen Sheila upstage Prince several times.
Maybe the most blatant in recent times was Prince's last appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The band played "Everlasting Now," And while Prince was good, Sheila definitely OWNED that entire room. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I'm sorry...
I really hate it when people try to compare musicians in terms of "who's better"... THAT being said... You're all whacked. Mike Scott is definately blazin', and I've seen him in small clubs in D.C. up close, BUT... he did NOT "beat Prince" in the Rave concert, or any other time... Neither did Dez, Levi, or Miko. NOBODY plays funk Bass the way Prince does, and he is underrated with other styles on Bass. Most all musicians in Prince's bands, past and present, will tell U that it's spooky working with P, 'cause he can play your instrument as well or better than U. This is not a myth... Don't sleep. Don't believe the bullshit on this thread. Don't underestimate P's skills on guitar, bass, keys, or even drums... although I gotta say John Blackwell might be an exception. Peace. G. Who's the dude in the Sign o the times vid that sits down on the stage with some crazy hat strings hanging over his face, playing a totally mean jazz guitar (I think during Beautiful night).
I reckon he's better than Prince...at playing that mean jazz guitar. While sitting on stage. Wearing some string shit over his face. At least.

I agree with Geovanni.
It's absurd to compare styles. Maybe Miko can play guitar faster than Prince, but that is not a competition, you are not better because you play fast. The question is. Renato, for e.g., is an excelent keyboardist, probably best Prince has had. And I will never say Prince is best. I only say Prince is more personal, and Prince can play, at least, the same. And I think Prince loves his musicians to make their work. I saw Prince when Miko in the band, and Mike played solos sometimes, and Prince other times. No competition.
