Prince : over 100 million album sales or not?

Browsing through ths site today I've read 2 conflicting reports , one is a comment on an article on the Uptown fanzine advert that states that "Prince has sold over 100 million copies of his albums".I read that and thought,cool,if its in Uptown they'll have double-checked facts etc and know its correct.Then I've just read a thread here that states that "Prince is 33rd in line of best-selling artists in US history" and has apparently
sold 36.5 million albums in the USA , which would therefore mean hes sold another 64 million outside the USA , which I don't think is too likely from reports I've read.Anyone know anything definite about his sales figures or is everyone just guessing nowadays?

I'm thinking worldwide record sales may be in the 100 mill. status, but LP's :

4U= 1Mil
Prince= 2Mil
Dirty Mind= 1Mil
Controversy= 2Mil
1999= 5Mil
Purple R=15Mil
ATWIAD= 5Mil
Parade= 3Mil
SOTT= 3Mil
LoveSexy= 1Mil
Batman= 4Mil
Graffiti= 2Mil
D&P= 6Mil
O)+>= 2Mil
Hits(combined 1/2/B-sides)=5Mil
Come= 500K
Gold= 500K
Girl 6=500K
C&D= 500K
Emancipation= 1Mil
Crystal Ball= 1Mil
New Power Soul= 500K
Rave= 500K
Vault= 500K
Prince Hits= 1Mil
TRC= 500K
XE= (give away)
News=100K

Did I miss any?

I would say 64mil LP's in the States alone. My numbers may be off a bit towards the end but they would only change the amount by about 5 Million.Still that would mean he's way over 36Mil. (man I got way to much time on my hands. It did just snow about 6 inches here in Baltimore tho.)

Only problem with this is that you're using worldwide numbers...

However, with that "over 100 million" thing, I believe includes singles.

And, I'd just like to add that ranking 33rd is a lot lower than I expected.

still that's more than 36Mil. Imagine if Prince had of released the "Black Album" round 1989. or you could count bootlegs. That LP has got have sold about 5million Boot copies

I think for a guy that doesn't do safe commercial albums & has never just basically "sold out" just to sell product..

Prince sold allot!

also..

I think if Prince was looking for ($$$) he could have done a HUGE Worldwide Purple Rain tour.. which he probably would have been twice as big & also sold another 5-10 million albums for Purple Rain (IF he wanted to milk it) I mean he could have been on the road with that product for a few years if he wanted! Just touring to every little country..

but..

He hates doing long tours because he has so much to say on new music! He gets bored easy.. we all know how he flips from one thing to the next.

Well, I think you're being a little too optimistic.

That's not the case with Purple Rain though. Prince only started to sell records overseas long after the success of Purple Rain. I mean, take a look at the amount of shows he did in Eupore from 1986-1996 as compared to North America. There's no comparison.

Afer the Lovesexy tour, Prince didn't really start doing major tours in North American again until 1997 (the Act I tour in 1993 was pretty short) - and has consequently toured here just about every year since.

Between 1986-1996, Europe was his biggest market...

But to answer the original question of this thread:

IMO Prince has sold 75 million albums.
