Prince Strange/Superstition/Influences

Has anyone notice that "Stange Relationship" and "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder use the same chord progression. There is even that little piano chord vamp that comes at the end of the chorus in both songs. Its exactly the same!

This takes nothing away from he's genius. He created a totally new and fresh song with the piano riff.

Can you name some other songs the he re-worked into personal hits?

1. "Superstition" is in E-Flat; "Strange Relationship" is in D.

2. "Superstition" has no chord changes until the hook (...when you believe in things..."). "Strange Relationship" = dmin gmin gmin a7 dmin throughout verses; "...baby, I just can't stand..." = eflat7 bflatmaj7 a7 dmin eflat7 bflatmaj7 a7

3. Vamp at the end of the chorus in "Super" is straight eflat; vamp at the end of the chorus in "Strange" goes back to the main changes (d, g, g, d)

Exactly the same? ...no.

Similar? I guess...

I'm sure you know, you can use the same chord progression in a different key.

Also I'm sure you know that Stevie is nt playing all of those chords in the actual song. Song books and chord charts add alot that isnt really there.

I listened again and your right about the end of the chorus.

The SR chorus ending vamp is exactly like a horn vanp in the Sup. Try just listening to the two songs and you'll definaltly here the simularities.

Also check out Prince's performance of SR on the ONA tour DVD! Stevie influence all the way!

I hear the similarities, but your claim that they are exactly the same is a little exaggerated.

Of course you can play the same progression in different keys, but that didn't happen here.

My point is that 'Superstition' has no progression except for the "...when you believe in things..." section.

'Strange Relationship' has a i, iv, iv, i progression during the entire song, barring the pre-hook and the vamp...

...whatever...I could go on all friggin' day...

Nice talking to you, Little Wing! smile
