ThreadBare said: All that to say: Sure, his bands usually comprise members who are more advanced on their instruments than he is, maybe not the entire band but a lot of the members. Some come to mind:
Blackwell Rhonda Renato Sheila E. Lisa and, last but not least: Tony M. Agreed totally on Tony M. What a guy...

All the people who've been mentioned here (with the exception of Tony M) are very good players, and Prince, I think, is excellent on all the instruments he plays. Just how excellent is open to debate, but lets not forget he is bloody good. Why does everything have to be definitive and black and white?
John Blackwell is amazing. Rhonda has a very cool sound and style, and seems to be very versatile. Larry plays funk bass like he's in some funky cartoon or something, in a good way that is. Renato, for me, is just ok. Not because he can't play, I just don't like his style as much as other keyboardists. I would have to say that compared to a Herbie Hancock, or even Stevie Wonder, Prince probably isn't in the same league at keys, but again, he is bloody good at keys, and bloody good at nearly everything he does. That's worth appreciating. U don't have to be the best to be brilliant. Keep it in perspective.

It is so funny to read all the comments above. I have heard and read stuff like that for so many years now when it comes to Prince.
Professional musicians, guys like Miles Davis, Maceo, Clapton + all those who have worked with Prince call him a musical genius, are totally amazed by his musical skills, his versatility. Many of them (like Maceo or Lenny) have said he is one of the top multi-instrumentists in the world but...guess what some dumbss fans (SEE ABOVE) know it is not true. prince is way overrated. His band members are better than him now. That's the last news. How many musicians can pretend playing nearly all instruments, producing, arranging and composing so well on albums like Sign O the Times or TRC. Who for fuck sake ? Stevie Wonder, Mc Cartney Miller and few others but let me tell you something your list of names will be pretty short if you try to make one. Prince can be criticized for a million things (his career management, his religious choices, his production options sometimes, the fact he is a fucking weirdo...) but for god sake if you take away from him his recognised main qualities (musicianship) then there is nothing left. Soon someone's gonna pretend that Robbie Williams is a better musician than Prince if we carry on like this.

By the way for those who think Mike Scott is fast and better guitar player than Prince. Prince has repeated in 2 interviews around 97-98 that Mike Scott was talented but has no sense of space and that he didn't know yet how to play with silence which Prince think is the main quality a musician can have. It took that from Joni Mitchell.
It is not because you are bloody fast on a guitar that you touch people deep in their heart. far from that actually. Listen to Wes Montgomery and his way of taking the time, the space between the notes in his great melodies and you'll understand what makes a great musician. I reckon he's better than Prince...at playing that mean jazz guitar. While sitting on stage. Wearing some string shit over his face. At least. I think it's Miko Weaver. And Miko has said that he learnt all his licks from Prince, so that puts your argument to bed

and mike scott with his style of guitar playing larry graham on bass najee on sax and flute rosie g. with her style of singing dr. fink on keys -- fast fingers! what about Levi?! nah, seriously, these guys certainly added another element to Prince's music, each in their own way but they never outplayed him... At the recent Basement Aftershow in Sydney; Renato was doing this killer solo on the keys, I said something like -"He is the man!", Prince replied "He's not the man." as he got on the keys. He then did his own solo for a little while giving us the impression that he's just as good. - Poor Renato.. you probably got the man fired. He is the bOmb though.

Some of you are such idolworshippers. It'd be a shorter list to make of musicians in his band who WEREN'T better than him on their specific instruments.

I'll give you Sheila and Blackwell, but Larry??? I think Prince is way better on bass, Larry just thumps and plays with fuzz. Let's see Larry try the bass solo that Prince plays during the video clip of him in the studio playing along to Partyman. School is in Mr Graham.
Prince is the best guitar player, drums would have to go to Blackwell or Sheila, but Prince can tear the drums up, ie. Beautiful Night in SOTT movie. The keys is tough because Prince can light the keys up. If Prince is not better than Fink or Renato, he's really close. As for the bass, it's like playing the guitar and I have that clip of Party Man. Prince is doing some unbelievable things and its only in ten seconds. If anything Larry made Prince show his true prowness on the bass so not to get shown up. __________________________________________________

ThreadBare said: Wow. I think Renato's definitely a more solid player than Prince, who has his moments. But I find Prince's piano playing pretty basic, whereas Renato makes his keyboard/piano talk!!!
Exactly. I have never heard anyone in any of Prince's bands play the piano or keyboards as brilliantly as Renato. His style really adds a lot to Prince's tunes. Listening to live boots, like some performances of Xenophobia or the one of the "Cool" soundcheck, the two NightTown instrumentals, and so on and so on. He makes those boards sound like something otherworldly and fresh. Not the standard short paintbynumbers solo of other keyboardists in Prince's band. Dude definately outplayed Prince on those keys many times, although they're so different that comparison is hard. I just pray to god that we'll one day have a chance to hear some of those cool Renato solo's on a studio album. He wasn't featured nearly enough on "N.E.W.S" imo. I could have done with a 14 minute Renato solo on that one and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

If you are amazed by Mike Scott, then you are easily impressed when it comes to guitar. he is a very average guitar player. Nothing exceptionnal. Buy a wes Montgomery (with Smith) CD now to your record store, then you will understand what I mean by being a good guitar player. [This message was edited Mon Dec 8 8:00:11 PST 2003 by VINCENT]
