FOREVER IN MY LIFE was a mistake.
From Per Nilsen's "DMSR" - Prince had the engineer cut out the backing vocals when he did the lead vocal, and came in one measure too late. When he played it back, he liked the mistake so he kept it. If you listen to the song, you'll see how it COULD have all lined up - I always wanted to do a cover of the song with the vocals in their intended spots, just to see what it sounded like. So, sometimes, the genius lies in recognizing a mistake's beauty. [This message was edited Fri Dec 5 13:05:45 PST 2003 by otan] The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Specifically, if you listen to stuff like 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker', 'When 2 R In Love', or 'Adore' and then go and listen to Gaye's 'Come Get To This', 'Distant Lover' or 'Just To Keep You Satisfied', it becomes instantly apparent.
I was gonna comment on Marvin too. Not that they necessarily do it the same way, but Marvin was also very innovative at layering his backing vocals. Even on 'Midnight Love', he did really cool stuff with "Sexual Healing", "Turn On Some Music" (which was sampled by Erick Sermon) and "Rockin' After Midnight". Marvin was very creative in that aspect, and I think Prince has definitely taken it to another level. I love the background vocals at the end of "Gold" and "Pink Cashmere".

ya, levi was filmed talking about this. and he also said that Prince just comes in and lays the other vocals down without listening 2 any other vocal tracks. and he lays it down in the key that Prince wants. (most artists need 2 listen 2 the other vocal track 2 help them lay down that vocal track in the right key, harmony etc. etc.) i really dug that when i saw levi in that interview. it was too cool. that is one of the many things i dig about prince's music. the lyrics, and the way they R sung. with his voice being the background vocals. 2 cool, way 2 cool. PEACE N B WiLD!!! Then Hans said Levi was full of sh*t... -SWANGdon'tknow

The vocal layering is so beautiful in 'Lovesexy' And I like the fact that on the first track of his first album (For You) he is already showing off these vocal talents.

those backgrounds on Adore are a trip--he made himself into a funky scary choir "Climb in my fur."

Finally a thread on one of Prince's TRUE strengths. his background layering is probably some of the most unique I've heard to date. Gotta give him props on this. Whatever he does, it works and works well.

What it would do was to completely delete the top layer of vocals and instruments and leave the background. I first discovered "Come" this way and it allowed me to understand how he makes all the great sounds.
In that song when he sings "Like a strawberry, chocolate fender jazz mash potato fuzz toad...etc etc" he backs it up with this sleazy quite harsh vocal which is very hard to pick up when listening in the normal mode. I love listening to the music this way sometimes so I have never fixed that stereo. i was able to do this same thing with my portable CD player. if i would only plug my headphones in a little bit - it would only pick up the background. VERY COOL STUFF - i too started listening to Prince this way. just to hear all the cool stuff that was covered up!!! I did this when I was stuck in the hospital for three months in High School. I had a lot of free time on my hands. I do it with the new albums when they come out too

Yeah! Always got in2 the layered backing vocals. Altho their music is vastly different the Eurythmics were doing similar things with Annie Lennox' vocals on their albums at around the same time. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"
