WTF is so great about the Grand Progression? Hey, now I'm a big fan, have all the albums, singles, widely-circulating out-takes yadda, yadda, and I just don't see what's so great about this track.
Honestly, I don't - any fans wanna put their case across as to why it's so good? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

i dig the lyrics and the style. it is a cool song. i only wish i had a better recorded version.

The melody and vocal performance is beautiful, but it needs a little more production on it generally to turn it into a classic. | |

I think part of the lack of appeal musically for some people stems from the chord progression that Prince has built the song around. which sounds 'forced' or unnatural.
The original concept of The Grand Progression was a series of 17 chords building from Ab to C (covering an octave and a bit, possibly incorporating every semitone step) with all chords related to Ab in some way. To draw an analogy, it's a bit like a poet planning to write something with each consecutive line starting with the next letter of the alphabet, but also with each line using a word related in some way to a key word in the first line of the poem. It provides some challenge to the poet and could be of some interest to the reader, but it doesn't necessarily yield the most poetic results. . I'm not really sure. It is very meloncholy, yet comforting. It's one of those songs I can put on repeat and listen to for hours (along with Open Book, Space - Universal Love Remix ..) It's soothing. Doesn't make it a 'good song' technically, but I dig it. | |

 I love this song -- one of my all-time favs. Maybe it's just the way it connects with me... the voice, the vulnerability, the way it builds. It is VERY... (for lack of a better word) ...lovely!! It has an awesome vibe to it -- reverberating deep inside my heart and soul. I could drink this song for days and still thirst for it.

Its what makes any ballad great - the vibe that it creates. Its not technical and has littel to do with the instrumentation or composition - in my humble opinion. Grand Progression gets that kind of vibe that ..Snow in April gets - you have to slow down and listen to the song when its on. | |

This could have been a great song. But the instrumentation and production on this track (at least the version that is widely circulated) is really weak, imo. The dated synth sound on it ruins the song for me. It needed more sophisticated instrumentation for it to work. | |

I love this song...its quiet and has a quaint melody--and the chorus is powerful yet subtle...it was one of my first boots made on tape from somebody (thanks I Go To...). This song is one of the greats. I wish he would revisit this one like he did with Empty Room... now Open Book I cant understand what the fuss is all about--any of that Depostion boot songs ..many are underwhelming "Climb in my fur." | |

Near the end of the track, prince strays from the melody and ad-libs a scream of "the grannnd progresiiion". during this moment i have never felt more alive. it touches the soul. You do as I say | |

The track has alot of charm. It's rough around the edges, but thats what's kind of appealing about it. It's a somber track and princes vocals sound a bit errie, isolated and alone. | |
