He played drums at the Fillmore in SF, 2001. Actually he was just showing off after Sheila threw Blackwell off the drums. Great night... er, morning.

He played drums on The Truth
I think he played some percussion on One Nite Alone (Studio)

Also: It is very easy to piece together songs on Protools and other studio software when there is a drum machine or loop which is in perfect time. It is very difficult to play drums to a click track. Knowing how Prince likes to write a song or several in a 24 hour span, using real drums would be nearly impossible to get this done. Also, I read an interview once about why he uses drum machines. He said that he had a hard time finding a drummer at two or three in the morning to come to the studio when he had a song idea.

More about Protools: Basically when you have everything synched in perfect time with a drum machine, you can cut and paste and edit very easily with the click of a mouse. I have recorded drums and it is much easier to produce a song when there is a drum machine layed down first. It does not sound as live, however, in the end (the reason why I like Prince's music with real drums more).

Lovesexy: I believe most of that is Sheila E. Same with Black Album. There is also drum machine on several of those songs.

I know Pro tools, I have recorded an album using that software, and you're absolutely right.
But what I don't know is why he doesn't drum never.
And about The Truth. What songs are you talking about? I think there are only 2 songs with drums, and they are beat programming. Are you talking about percussion?
I'm interested in knowing if congas on Man in uniform are real or not.

sorry. percussion. but he plays quite a bit of it and most of it seems live. i think he recorded acoustic guitar and vocals first on most of those tracks and layed everything else on top of it. this would make drum programming difficult - which is why i think all of that percussion on the truth is real and not a machine.

I know this isn't the most recent example, but I fell in love with Prince playing drums on Tambourine.

Yes, I did as well. I also love his drumming on Irresistable Bitch and the video for America

KIRKY DID NOT PLAY ON THE TRUTH!

Emancipation has P drums.

He doesn't credit himself specifically on Drums and Bass that much anymore, but he's definately been in the mix on drums, and he's playin' Bass on some of N.E.W.S., but there's no credit.

He's better on drums than most people will admit.

Emancipation contains only a few tracks that feature live drumming (not necessarily acoustic drums either).

Betcha By Golly Wow! - Mike Bland on acoustic drums

We Gets Up - might be Roland V-Pro triggers probably played by Kirk or maybe it's just programmed; either way, it's definitely looped.

Damned If Eye Do - V-Pro triggers again; def Kirk, def looped.

The Holy River - V-Pro; Kirk; played live

Saviour - acoustics by Mike Bland

One of Us - either V-Pro or acoustics; def Kirk

The Love We Make - probably acoustics (if not, V-Pro); def Kirk

...so my theory...Prince didn't play drums on jack on Emancipation...and he probably didn't program much either...

The Truth percussion and programming has KAJ written all over its little acoustic face!!! wink

and btw, I give MUCH credit to Prince as a drummer...one of my favorite drummers of all time...I've been waiting for years for him to do it again..

When I heard the European soundchecks with him playin on it, it confirmed what I kinda already knew...He hasn't lost a thing!!! smile
