Prince (the album) I've just realised... its a fucking good album.
Its always been one of those albums that I've never played much or given a chance but last night I put it on for some reason and ended up playing it 3 times. There's not a bad song on it, its got some of his best ever work (Bambi, I wanna be your lover) and no way it sounds over 20 years old. Even though the falsetto is over used a bit the ballads on it are excellent. This album's always over-looked (maybe the naked horse riding pictures put me off) Anyone rate it?

I'm always surprised that there are people on a Prince-forum-site who don't like the first two albums.
It's the essence of Prince's music ... he developped from there on, but never changed drastically. I can't understand that someone considers himself a fan ... and dislikes the first two albums. "I wanna be you lover" is almost the ultimate Prince-song. The ballads in this first period are great ... which I can't say of the overwhelming ballads? after 1981. From the 90's on the ballads were awful. To bad he just developped, and his music stop growing some time.

I've never disliked the first 2 albums just never really given them a chance so I was surprised and impressed at how much I enjoyed the 'prince' album after giving it a couple of spins. And like you say the ballads are a different class.

Nothing against the songs, but I've never really liked his falsetto on the first 2 albums. Love hearing him play the songs live, but those 2 records irk me. Something about the production just doesn't do it for me, and I must say they sound dated musically. Prince is one of my favourites. I'm sure if Prince recorded it again, using the modern keyboards, it would sound better than a lot of albums we hear in radio today.
All melodies are marvellous, and the arrangements. And it's true, It's the essence of Prince's music : When we're dancing...= Sometimes..., I love U but... With you = Adore, The beautiful ones... Sexy dancer = Kiss, Get Wild... Bambi= Peach, The Undertaker, ... Why you wanna... = I could never take, Dolphin and so on. For you, and Prince are special to me. When I listen to them, I can almost see the 20-year-old Prince playing all instruments, investigating, innovating... That was the beginning of this marvellous journey.

I think the reason so many folks struggle with it is because of how dated it sounds. If you can't appreciate the sound, then it's pretty difficult to hear the music.
Me personally, I love it. I think some of his best ballads were on those first two albums. 'Baby', 'When We're Dancing Close And Slow', and 'It's Gonna Be Lonely' are definite keepers.

Great album...but "Still Waiting" on the CD is messed up. The beginning of the song is clipped off & the instrumental intro is edited.
In other words, it needs to be remastered properly!!

In other words, it needs to be remastered properly!! yeah! i wonder if they did that to make space on the cd...nonetheless it messes up the song. i always listen to my vinyl copy of the album cuz of that.

very true. i like it a lot, but don't listen to it very often. and while it definitely is the essence of Prince and what he was to become, it wasn't yet distilled. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

I used to think "Bambi" was just okay until I heard it live at Paisley Park back in '95. It made me appreciate the song a WHOLE lot more. NCC2012... your local Trekkie. =/\=

whaaat??!!! you mean i haven't been hearing the real deal all this time? damn, i need to get that album on vinyl, like NOW. still waiting is one of my all-time fav prince ballads...interestingly, i didn't appreciate it until a couple years ago, after hearing the live version on one of the city lights boots.

I love the album version of Bambi, but this is a rare case in which he needs to release a re-recorded version. He just tears that song up now. This is HIS rock song. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

My favorite Prince record is definately Prince. I also love Parade and Sign 'O' the Times, but Prince is sooo lonely, desparate and funky. Prince , in my opinion is far superior to For You and Dirty Mind (if you take away forgettable Do It All Night and repetitive title track, you barely have any DM left, thought the rest is essential).

probably my third favorite -- good ALL the way thru!

Yep, yep, yep! Of all the Prince CD's I have, his first two are the ones that get constant play in my CD player. I LOVE that song, "It's Gonna Be Lonely". The cascading harmonies are to die for.
Also, the intro to the first album is like listening to angles singing. The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon...dammit!
