I like people who don't mince their words... I think if we change towards Prince as well as Prince changing (sometimes) his musical style, then there is more chance of us being 'fans' again. Especially if we 'really' want. The question is not about whether Prince's music is currently great (we can argue about that until the cows come home, or the cows can argue about it until we come home).

No, the question is this: do we really want to be a fan?It is our choice. We are free. And we are glad that we are free. Free to change our minds. Free to go most anywhere, anytime. There's many a man who's not!

Don't tell me, I'm nuts! Here we go again...BASS--How low can you go?

Could it be some people are tooo busy comparing his music?

Take each individual piece on it's own merit, not something that doesn't measure up to what you think u want.

Could it be that those who have recently seen Prince in concert have been successfully brainwashed?

Why is it always about people comparing Prince of now and Prince of yesterday? Why are people constantly being condemned for being able to tell that MOST OF PRINCES' NEW STUFF IS SHIT!

origmnd said:

This line sounds like it was written by Prince the Fascist himself. People have no problem in deciding what they do and don't like. Why make something pretty just because you appreciate and respect a persons artform. There's nothing to compare, when a good album hits we know it and when he gives us this crap as he has for the past few years we KNOW THAT too. PRINCE FAMS DO KNOW WHAT THEY WANT: BETTER MUSIC!

Your negativity is so uninspiring.

And you're so uninspiring PERIOD; runnin that same old line. Get your money ready for Prince's new album "Prince does #2" a live recording of Prince in his own private bathroom makin the most funky sounds since "The Symbol album".
My name is Prince evilking and I want your money

I honestly don't understand how any Prince fan can't love TRC.

I LOVE this album.

The Sensual Everafter is gorgeous, 1+1+1=3 is funky as hell, Hallucination Rain has me in a trance when I listen to it, and Last December is just so genuinely powerful.

Great theme piece if you ask me.

You can really sense Prince's passion for his religious beliefs throughout this whole album.

Besides, I was raised as a JW when I was a kid (I'm not one anymore really, don't believe in religion), so I know what he's singing about pretty well.

Hey, sometimes you just grow apart. Prince has evolved and I'm sure you have too, maybe just in different directions.

It's funny, this started happenening to me, but as I started getting into more jazz stuff, Prince kind of evolved more in my direction, I couldn't be happier. (It's because I'm gelling OLD, and he's making old people's music! smile)

Prince esta muerto. Prince ESTA muerto. Long-live Prince and the New Power Generation. Where a lot of us are walking, Prince is already coming back. He's too quick, too early and too busy looking good for a lot of us!

FYI -- Hallucination Rain was on Exodus, not TRC.

Can I be nosey and ask what are the ages of the people that agree with this thread? The reason I am curious is because I am 36 and I TOTALLY agree with this. Therefore, I am wondering if the reason we feel this way is because we were there at the very beginning of Prince's career. I have tried SOOO hard to get into his newer music, but I just can't. I crave the vintage Prince sound. And like someone else said, he almost captured that sound on the Rave cd.. but not quite. Prince is a musical genius.. this much I know.. I just want him to go back to his roots and give us some more of what made us fans to begin with. Until then, I will keep listening to my older, priceless disks.

This is fair enough in a way, but remember this:

It sounds like you want Prince to change. And change he may do. But there is another option, if you want to like his new stuff--you can change.

Prince said it himself. Listen to the Gold album. He is too quick for a lot of us. Where we are walking to, he is walking from. He is too busy looking good. Watch "Enter the Dragon". Suddenly, I don't like your island. If he is looking good, he is looking God!

I think you're missing smokeverbs' point. I think it's less a matter of comparing and measuring, and more an emotional thing. It really hurts to realize that something that was once so powerful and mind-boggling for you, can no longer do that for you. It's a huge letdown, and it sucks. It has little to do with being able to objectively rate and compare past and present music, and nothing to do with just "moving on already if you don't like the current shit" as someone else said.

You are Ill. Chaos and Disorder is brilliant except for Into The Light. Emancipation has at least 15 killer tracks on it. I agree it should have been a double album with the left over tracks going towards b-sides for all those singles he should have released off it. NPS is always getting dogged in here! I know its not even top 10, but it has a good 5 songs on it. How many albums released these days can boast 5 decent songs? Not Many. Rave only beats out Diamonds and Peals and Come IMO. Has 5 songs I like also, but 5 out of 15, where NPS gets 5 out of 11. Crystal Ball was just a cash cow. I already had 90% of those tracks in poor quality boots. So I was happy to get mastered versions of these tracks, but I don't count it as new material, with exception of The Truth. Which featured a handful of brilliant songs as well. That brings us to The Rainbow Children. The whole thing save Wedding Feast(obviously) and The Digital Garden is sheer quality. I don't care what anyone says. Prince may have dropped the ball with four seperate albums, but overall his career is nothing short of amazing.

I think it's funny how so many fans say "aside from ___ he hasn't released anything decent since ___"

The telling thing is, everybody mentions different albums as the point where he stopped making good music and everybody lists different exceptions. In this thread alone he hasn't made a decent album since Lovesexy, Symbol, Emancipation and The Truth. With the exception of Rave, New Power Soul and The Rainbow Children.

That tells me something: he's still funky and he ain't lost nothing! Every album means something to someone. I'm sure not even Skipper himself expects every fan to dig every release.
