What non-Prince fans have to say....

about his being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I came across these comments at a site where I no longer post:

I'd expect this type of question from this particular poster rolleyes

Is it just me, or does anyone else not "get" Prince? I can't think he was nearly as influential as some of the others who got in.

Here are the responses

  • In the 80s??? Prince was amazing - especially some of his pre and post Purple Rain stuff that didn't make it to the radio as much. And other musicians definitely consider him influential and one of the more inovative artists of his time. I guess it all depends on the kind of music you listen to.

  • Prince did some great stuff. I wouldnt really think of his as "influential". Its more that he was great at great at taking influences from other sources and blending them in unusual and sublte ways. (but neither zztop nor seger were really "influential either--just really good.) I used to think the same thing as ***--that his stuff before and after Purple Rain was good but that PR itself sucked. But now when i go back and listen, even "when doves cry", which, at the time, I hated, I think is a pretty good track.

but, what did Prince release as early as 1978?

  • I've heard lots of rock and r&b artists cite Prince as being one of their early influences (if you watch "Behind the Music", you pick up these things... TLC and Macy Gray come immediately to mind, but I've noticed many).
He wasn't always commercially popular, but he was out there. Did a lot of writing, too.

  • Prince:

    7 April 1978 LP (+CD) FOR YOU

    For You 1.06
    In Love 3.38
Soft and Wet 3.01 (lyrics: Prince/Chris Moon)
    Crazy You 2.17
Just As Long As We're Together 6.24
    Baby 3.09
    My Love Is Forever 4.09
    So Blue 4.26
    I'm Yours 5.01
    7 June 1978 7" Soft and Wet

Soft and Wet 3.01/So Blue 4.26
21 Nov 1978 7" Just As Long As We're Together

Just As Long As We're Together 3.25 [single edit]/In Love 3.38

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" came out in 1979.

Hmmm...

It’s clear these people know very little about black music in the 80’s. Maybe someone should hip them to the “Minneapolis Sound”. Kinda hard to create an entire sound and not be influential

I was just listening to a classic rock station out of Salt Lake City, Utah. (Why? Because they actually play music)

Anywho, the evening drive dj was doing a 5 for the drive at 5 and playing RNR HOF inductees. He started discussing the inductees. He named the list of inductees. Guess who wasn't even mentioned. You got it. Prince.

I thought, "How ignorant! Okay, so he's not in your format. Doesn't make him less of an inductee."
I'm firmly planted in denial

RnB artist do not get the props they deserve from the industry or even the public. I am sure when P-Funk got in to the RNR Hall of Fame plenty of people did not who they were either or think they were an influnence.

Lot's of people are walking around today thinking funk/rock started with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and don't know crap about the influnence P-Funk had on RHCP.

The Dells who were are also on the list have been together since 1952 and he took serious campaining to get them in.

then maybe folks coulda started doin a bit of homework and started learnin a little bit about all the influences, as opposed to just sittin and thinkin such things. everybody is not that lazy.

When the world runs out of people that don't "get" Prince, the world shall also run dry of Tilt-O-Whirl operators.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

A hard rock DJ (primarily upset about
Black Sabbath{I agree} once again not getting in) mentioned Prince by saying ..."he's great at what he does".

Whatever! I'm sick of people that have no idea what they're talking about. I can't think of anyone that deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame more than Prince.
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.
