These lists usually infuriate me, but this one seems rather bang on - the top ten anyway.

I think its OK, the sodding Beatles will always top these things. The Stones are not too high, but who the hell puts the Who above Led Zeppelin? At least Jimi's up there, but whatever you think about Michael Jackson, putting him at no.39 is ridiculous

i thought wow a good list, then i saw REM at number 13. umm...no.

but prince at number 5 is amazing, considering everything thats happened to him since 1990. plus, look at the 4 above him, those are like the originators of modern music, prince is the highest from something like 1967 onwards!

Fuck The Beatles! Were they a great innovative band? Yes, once they stopped ripping of old blues men and did their own thing. Were they a great ACT - NO! I mean it's not like any of their performances are remembered for anything but "Beatlemania", and in truth that was just a product of the times. Geat composers/writers/band, but definitely not a great act.

I guess I take umbridge at the definition of "act". To me that should be about performance, and if that's the case The Beatles, Dylan and the Beach Boys are ranked much too high.

BEASTIE BOYS???
Look at Beastie Boys #32 & then look at everyone
thats rated lower.
No matter how great placement Prince gets I can't respect a list that puts Beastie Boys higher then James Brown, The Band, Sly or Creedence

I agree completely.

David Bowie at no. 4 and MJ at no. 39 shows this list is another stupid list based on personal tastes.
And I love David Bowie, and MJ as well. I only agree The Beatles at top 1, and I don't like them specially.

It's simply because he's better than both put together.

remember this chart is made up of music critics ratings of an acts albums and singles thoughout their careers...michael jackson only had two albums that were highly praised "off the wall" and "thriller". the rest of his career has been so-so ...prince had an almost unbroken run of great albums in the eighties.

i think the reason led zeppelin are not higher is the fact that they did not release singles and the chart is made up of albums and singles being rated.

Your history is whacked. Beatles hadn't ripped off any blues songs. In the early years, they wrote mostly R&B and rockabilly pastiches and even covered the exact same songs as say The Marvelettes and the Isleys. Their music is really not like the blues at all. Look to the Rolling Stones (who have cleared for most of their copyrights), but it's Led Zeppelin who got caught infringing the copyrights of Willie Dixon.

Maybe with the news of Prince's impending nomination
and then eventual induction into the RRHOF, there
might be a renewed interest in Prince and his work.

It wouldn't be uncommon. Recording artists who aren't
in the zeitgeist for a while sometimes have a resurgence
because of things like that - although Prince's influence can
easily be found in that zeitgeist. His career may
be beginning to be re-evaluated by some.

I have to assume that influence and innovation is a key ingredient in this list because the Sex Pistols who sold very few albums and had minimal output are listed in the top 40.

With that considered, there's absolutely no way that Prince should be above James Brown or Hendrix.

As a Prince fan, I understand your feelings about Prince's output. Without question he's released some of the greatest albums of all time. But understand that when you talk about Hendrix, in particular, you're speaking of someone who completely changed the landscape and vocabulary of electric guitar. I sincerely doubt that Prince has released anything that has had the impact and influence of 'Are You Experienced' or 'Electric Ladyland'.

Furthermore, I doubt seriously that you'll find another list of this kind that ranks Prince as high.

...
but this top 40 is a list of all the lists from around the world so he does rank in the top five.

...and i would also add that this list is only on the acts recorded output, if you also consider how musically talented each act was and how good they were in a live performance then i would say that prince should be even higher if not number one!!!
