this album is slated on the org, there r a few peeps who like it , i am 1 o them ,i think its xlent really funky jazz type music north and east r fab theres a 2minute guitar solo 7 mins in on north tremendous! west and south r very good too, i think the dissapointment 4 many peeps was ...its an instrumental collaboration of p and the band. the impression i get is that peeps on here have played it once then stuck it on the shelf vowing never 2 play it again ! which is silly give the cd a chance !.i was gonna start a thread on n.e.w.s, but didnt 4 the very reason i knew i'd get the type o replies u did , i like jazz i like funk i like instrumentals, so this album did appeal 2 me i also liked the madhouse albums from the 80's this instrumental stuff aint new 2 p.
ps xpectation is xlent 2...instrumental album only avail at npgmc if the guy's on the org who havent even listened 2 n.e.w.s gave it a chance some o them might like it !!!

It's been a long time coming since the likes of the Madhouse albums. For myself, the NEWS has been awaited for a long time now. This type of album should not be a stranger to a real Prince fan. He has demonstrated this musical style on three Madhouse albums, Alexa De Paris (an instrumental b-side on the mountains single) and several other hard to find releases. The NEWS just shows that Prince is every bit of 40 years old therefore the music should match the person. This album is cool jazz free-flowing with moments of funk and electric guitar all rolled up into one. Each track entitled North, East, West, and South illustrates its own musical sound influenced by which side of the globe it comes from. Do buy this album if you enjoy jazz with a mid-tempo pace and a bit stacato at times but if your looking for the Prince that slides around on the floor with his ass out, this album ain't the one. Also for my fellow Chi-townians, the cut North is definately for the steppa's!!! Only the grown and sexy!!! p.s i didn't write tht lol [This message was edited Sun Nov 23 4:34:45 PST 2003 by andykeen] [This message was edited Sun Nov 23 4:35:17 PST 2003 by andykeen] Keenmeister

I like it, and I also like the packaging, although it's not exactly sturdy, it is unique.
If you want to experience everything the little purple fella has to offer, get N.E.W.S.

I have to admit to getting it, racing back to the car and chucking it in the CD player and sitting there thinking WTF!!! Hitting the FF button and waiting to hear some lyrics kick in but na da!! Played it once all the way through when I got home and thought, oh well just add it to the collection.
Then the concert!! Hearing it whilst so hyped up waiting for him to appear on stage and then playing it after that ... whole new experience. I then laid back on a rainy evening and listened to it with candles lit and let myself get carried away with it. Who needs lyrics when the music alone conveys so much!! In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

Perhaps you might find it useful if someone posts on this
thread and actually gives you a little bit of information about this album instead of random babble Let's see, what have we got: N.E.W.S. thus called since it's tracks are dubbed North 14:00 East 14:00 West 14:00 South 14:00 All of which are an instrumental funk/jazz/new age hybrid with lots of solo's and strung out jamming vibes. There's no lyrics/vocals. Players on this album are: Prince; Guitar, Fender Rhodes, Digital Keyboards & Percussion Eric Leeds; Tenor & Baritone Saxophone John Blackwell; Drums Renato Neto; Piano & Synthesizers Rhonda Smith; Acoustic & Electric Bass Further statements: "Recorded at Paisley Park on Feb 6th all compositions published by Emancipated Music 2003 NPG Records, Inc. All Rights Reserved." Directed by Prince engineered by Jess Sutcliffe mixed by Prince NORTH- additional string samples: courtesy Clare Fisher Musical Technicians Joseph Lepinski & Takumi Package design by Jeremy Gavin & Prince. The package is pretty cool. Tho it is subject to easy creasing or breaking. It's cardboard all-round and it opens up like a compass, pointing in 4 directions with the cd in the middle. As I said, it looks very nice but it's not something to get your greasy paws on every day. As you can see from their respective timelengths all tracks last 14 minutes and they go pretty much all over the place. When listening to the album as a whole it seems like many more shorter compositions but somehow they have been woven into 14 minute "songs". Personally, I like this album a lot. It's wilder and less polished than the other recent jazzy album he released on npgmc called "Xpectation". I take it you've heard about/have the "Xpectation" tracks? If not, you should try and hunt them down because they are worth checking out. It's a very nice album. Reminiscent of the earlier Madhouse albums. And then there's the "C-Note" downloads, all of which are simply wonderful. Also mostly instrumental tracks, these songs contain some of the finest Prince-moments of recent years in tracks such as "Osaka" and "Tokyo". Anywho. Check it out one at a time and I bet you'll enjoy them. If you even slightly liked his Madhouse project than I'm sure you'll appreciate these too. Just don't expect anything too much like Emancipation or Rave or such. It's tuned to the vibe of TRC. Wonderfull & warm organic music. Top notch material imo. It's a great chill album. I love looping the CD when I have people over and everyone asks"who's this playin?"

I organised a function for work the other day and I quite often use Andreas Vollenweider as the music playing when they arrive. This time I put N.E.W.S. on and I could see people moving their feet and I had a heap of people ask when leaving what the music was and their reactions when I told them it was Prince were all of disbelief. I think sales of this CD in Brisbane just went up!! In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. So many people want Prince to be the same guy from 1984 and instantly trash anything he does that varies from the Purple Rain formula. As he grows, so does his art. It makes sense that this would be the case with any human being.

Well, yes, ok, you're right. And you did write some good info there, it's just that I didn't see it last night as I didn't feel like reading all that text without any kind of interpunction or paragraphs. It did my head in at the moment so I didn't bother. But you are right, and I should probably apologise for what I said. But I won't I mean, we're still on the org and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I like NEWS, and it probably deserves more attention than I give it.
But I LOVE Xpectation! For me, that's just as good, if not better, than Madhouse 8. C-NOTE, I'm not a big fan of, but it's nice to have. It's very so-so to me.
