I love Prince, but NO artist can top what Stevie did in the 70s.

Come on guys, lets get real.

I, like most of you, prefer prince, because he's the more interesting of the two characters.

But if you take 'music of the mind', 'talking book', 'innervisions', and 'songs in the key of life'.. you have 4 of the most inspired albums.

Listen to 'love's in need of love today' and tell me Stevie doesn't pour his soul into his music.
He might not be at his best now, in fact he's far from it, but at his best nobody could touch him. nobody.

Bearing all this in mind i have just heard Stevie has collaborated with Blue (fucking shit english r&b group) for a cover of 'sign, sealed, delivered'. This collaboration removes all artistic credibility fom Stevie, thus giving the prize to Prince. wink
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

In the past, I have had to be forcibly restrained after hearing Stevie's mauling of Redemption Song.
This guy lost it in a way only the castrated can understand.
I find a lot of his music plastic, insipid, uninspired, tossed-off, over-produced, formulatic tripe which often leaves me with the feeling that I've just ate twelve Mars Bars in one sitting.
Prince pours his soul into every note and vocal flex. If he's not inspired by life itself at the given moment (New Power Soul) you aint gonna get an inspired album, what what you do get is the best he can do at that time. He always gives it all he's got.
Stevie has been coasting on his reputation for going on 20 years now and his hair's crap.
Superstition, Village Ghetto Land and Sir Duke get thumbs up!. The rest is happy clappy idealistic backdrops for soul 'purists' and media-led sheep.

You are entitled to your opinion but this is some of the most ign't shit I've ever read. After every great artist reaches his peak, there's no other place to go but down. Stevie dominated the 70s. Prince pretty much dominated most of the 80s. And with the exception of ONA and TRC, that same plastic, insipid, uninspired, tossed-off, over-produced, formulatic tripe is pretty much all Prince has produced since Emancipation

Stevie Wonder should induct Prince into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!! That would be appropriate.!!

Stevie Wonder to Prince on June 27, 1994 at Glam Slam, LA:

"This is what we wanted to see. Everybody talkin' about the coming together of Prince And Stevie. I Want to say this to you Prince. As much as you might fell that I may have inspired you, You inspire me too!!

"Nuff said !!

That was an awesome duet of "Maybe Your Baby". Love Prince's guitar on that and Stevie sounded great. You can almost feel the energy in the room listening to that.

All this talk of who's the best...Like many of u, my cd player contains a multi disk holder. Why choose? Be it 'Living For The City' or 'Sign of the Times' i'm just glad that i have the choice to hear some truly inspired artists at the top of their game.

For music alone I'd probably go with Stevie, but with Prince you get perhaps the most complete artist/performer ever. You can't name one person that can do so many things as well as Prince does-- but like somebody said why choose one when you can have both?

both have excellent mastery of their vocal range I honestly think it is probably a tie and to be at a tie with stevie wonder means you must be above all others in the game

but stevie's 0ver all contstruction of his songs may be superior to Prince's

I love Prince, but Stevie hits me spiritually and emotionally every time, and I feel Stevie is the most prolific, and I like the political stances and sense of history he incorporates in his music. Prince - different emotions, different times.

I agree with pretty much everything you say here.

Except for the bit about Stevie being "the most prolific".

I think the word "prolific" is rampantly misunderstood. I hear people tossing it around all the time as if it relates to talent or something. It has to do with the volume of work produced, not the quality.

prolific adj. Producing abundant works or results: a prolific artist.

Knowing Stevie's work is almost a necesssity for a decent cultural literacy where soul music is regarded. For all the groundwork and influence he's presented, I respect the man as a musical demigod.

But Prince's edge, his angst, the genres he touches and the fact that his golden period happened during my teens all touch me more on a personal level.

Absolut co-sign. absolut

But like others have said, we thankfully have both - so why choose? I wouldn't give up either one's music for all the money in the world.
