When putting the artist aside and looking at just the material..
Stevie Wonder without a doubt.

Stevie's 70's albums inspired Prince. Song for song I got to give it to Stevie, but for originality and the melding of different genres, nothing compares to prince.. ______________________________________________

i enjoy listen to prince more than stevie, i have only listen to a few stevie songs most pretty good, alot of soul and emotion in to it, but i think princes songs mean more to him, and sings them like its hes last time he is going to sing a song! and hes feelings and emotions come out more with prince Keenmeister

Knowing Stevie's work is almost a necesssity for a decent cultural literacy where soul music is regarded. For all the groundwork and influence he's presented, I respect the man as a musical demigod.
But Prince's edge, his angst, the genres he touches and the fact that his golden period happened during my teens all touch me more on a personal level. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

In the past, I have had to be forcibly restrained after hearing Stevie's mauling of Redemption Song.
This guy lost it in a way only the castrated can understand. I find a lot of his music plastic, insipid, uninspired, tossed-off, over-produced, formulatic tripe which often leaves me with the feeling that I've just ate twelve Mars Bars in one sitting. Prince pours his soul into every note and vocal flex. If he's not inspired by life itself at the given moment (New Power Soul) you aint gonna get an inspired album, what what you do get is the best he can do at that time. He always gives it all he's got. Stevie has been coasting on his reputation for going on 20 years now and his hair's crap. Superstition, Village Ghetto Land and Sir Duke get . The rest is happy clappy idealistic backdrops for soul 'purists' and media-led sheep. . [This message was edited Thu Nov 20 16:13:25 PST 2003 by Number23]

That's what I'm talking about. Even when Prince sings God I don't hear God. Good topic, tough question and only time will tell.

I still to this day think Stevie's drum playing on "Superstition" may be the best drum track of all time.
It's so off the beat it's on it! Listen to that hi-hat! ______________________________________________

Stevie Wonder should induct Prince into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!! That would be appropriate.!!
Stevie Wonder to Prince on June 27, 1994 at Glam Slam, LA: "This is what we wanted to see. Everybody talkin' about the coming together of Prince And Stevie. I Want to say this to you Prince. As much as you might fell that I may have inspired you, You inspire me too!! "Nuff said !!

Both are really talented but Stevie Wonder's 70's albums were excellent. Prince, along with many other R&B singers today are inspired by Stevie's music.
I have all of Stevie's 70's albums and 'Songs In The Key Of Life' is brilliant. 'Fulfingness First Finale' is awesome too and 'Music Of My Mind' is one of his best albums in my opinion. In my opinion, both are awesome and I am a big, big fan of both so I like both Stevie and Prince the same

Stevie has so many wonderful things to say about Prince, and vice versa. Aside from Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, and a hits compilation, I know little about Stevie.
As a result I like Prince more. But, I can't compare the two. They are both wonderful, and essential in my opinion. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. I'm not impressed by Stevie ...
There are a few brilliant songs ... two great albums (Innervisions and Talking Book) ... but he's no Funk-legend. I will have a hard time choosing between Prince / James Brown / George Clinton / Sly Stone I'm afraid Prince wouldn't win that one every day of the week

I love both, but I think Prince wins it for me.
